I'll stop counting in weeks. Really, I will. But I've been a real live grown-up homeowner for four weeks. It's been four weeks of hot, unpleasant nights (we have no AC), a whining, crying, puppy who pees on the carpet, dust, unpacking boxes, and more sneezing than strictly necessary. But it's also been four weeks of reunions with old friends, working in my snug little office, getting furry puppy cuddles whenever I want, and being with my husband for days on end. He started school yesterday, so I don't see him nearly as much, and once the initial orientation and exam period is over, I will see him even less.

He is expected to put in 60 hours a week in the lab.

That's just lab. That's not counting lectures, coursework, homework, or being a TA.

...Just the lab.

As much as he gripes about our little "carpet pisser", I'm glad I have her for company. I've discovered that if we sit outside in the mornings, we working my laptop, she running around in the garden, then we both have better days. She'll sleep most of the afternoon in the office when it's hot on the side of the house and my laptop needs recharging, and she's better behaved in general. We've moved her crate from our bedroom to the nursery - fitting, since she's basically our test child at this point - and so she's not so happy to be in there alone, but she's adjusting. Cody and I are adjusting to getting up early. The earlier I wake up, the better a chance I have of getting something useful done.

Last week was all right. I spent most of my time working on Texas because my coworker was out, and then at the end of the week I found out our lawsuit was getting aggressive, so there was a lot of legal research and gunning for our opponents. It's been fun, and it also gives me an excuse to call my girl Angela and "consult" on issues like litigation. For the weekend we drove up to Idaho to rescue Cody's car and return the van his father had been letting us borrow so we could haul stuff around. Now Cody has his car and all is right in the world. I spent most of the weekend fending off a headache, although I also managed to get some good novel- and letter-writing done. I also went dancing. Belly dancing. On Broadway, because every dancer needs to be on Broadway at least once in her life. Also I danced in a bar. (It was for a kidney transplant benefit, but it was still a bar.) I'd thought we were just learning dances, so I didn't show up in my full performance gear, but it was fun all the same.

It's storming like crazy outside, and apparently Ivy likes it a lot. She also loves it when her dog food is soggy. I haven't seen her eat like that before.

All in all, life is good. Sure I had lousy headaches and felt miserable physically most of last week. I have good friends, a wonderful husband, and my cooking experiments are going better. Also, my washer and dryer are up and running again, so we can finally have some clean clothes. Clean clothes mean a lot to me.
