Day 1084: Three Weeks
Aug. 20th, 2013 09:41 pmThat's right. I've been an official homeowner for three weeks. It feels kind of uncanny, you know?
I don't know how long it will last, but I've been much better about making beds and doing dishes and cleaning floors. Maybe it's because this is a new house. Maybe because at the end of the day it's about the only useful thing I feel like doing. I keep saying I'm going to unpack boxes, but it keeps not happening. I have a routine now. Wake up. Feed the dog/read scriptures. (Let me tell you, there's nothing more spiritual-sounding than a puppy crunching on kibble. Not.) Then I shower, and I walk the dog, and I make fruit smoothies for breakfast. If I'm lucky, I get some writing in. Otherwise, it's straight to work. Sometimes Cody pops by to say hello or take Ivy for a potty break, and then we have lunch, me and Cody and Ivy. Then I go back to work. After work I feed Ivy, and I make dinner, and we take Ivy for a walk. And then we attempt to do housework before bed. Usually we catch an episode or two of Burn Notice before turning in. During Burn Notice I answer emails, crochet, or write letters, or...update my journal. We're both working on getting up at decent times to get stuff done. Morning is the only time I'm guaranteed to get done the things I need to get done, so the earlier I get up, the better. Until we know Cody's school schedule, of course, this schedule is temporary.
On Saturday it was my girl BenTen's birthday. I hadn't seen my girl Sei since...Christmas of 2010. It was awesome. We sat around shooting the breeze, eating snacks, and having fun. Sei and I used to have Wednesday nights, just the two of us, fangirling and reading and writing together, and I've missed her fiercely. We also had a serious talk about our little Indie publishing house, goals, plans, research. It's going to take a lot of work, and we're going to start small, just friends and family (mostly because they're all willing to donate time and work for a pittance), but we have solid plans. The least of which involve signing paperwork and paying lawyer fees.
On a random note, my brother-in-law sent a case my way. Friend of his needed legal help, so he called me. It's not really my area of expertise, so I called a down-and-out lawyer friend, and we agreed to split the fee and the work. It's going to be tough, but we can do it.
Being a homeowner and a potential business-owner has been an adventure, but it's all right. We have friends and family and a nice ward, and everything will be okay. We just need to stick together. Having Cody around has been awesome, and I'm going to miss him when he's off at school.
This morning I did pretty good, worked on my novel, and while dinner was cooking, I wrote a piece of flash fiction. (It's a collaborative piece. One girl took a photo. I provided a backstory. It's going to be interesting.) I also got a random piece of inspiration while Cody was playing with little miss Ivy, so if I can get the appropriate picture, story times will happen.
When I was out grocery shopping last night, I spotted a packet for char siu sauce down the international food aisle. I was a little skeptical, since it was Hawaiian and not Chinese, and when I mixed it up, it was scary neon pink, but I followed the directions anyway...and it was delicious. I figure the neon pink is Hawaiian cheer, but it was tasty, so I trust that packet of sauce, and I am happy.
On Saturday our neighbor gave us carte blanche to forage for fresh vegetables in his garden, so I picked corn and zucchini and tomatoes. Tonight we had corn. Last night we had zucchini fries, which were delicious. Also, our very nice elderly neighbor weeded a part of our garden. I need to figure out something nice to do for said neighbors.
