Day 1021: In the Beginning
Mar. 18th, 2012 01:13 pmThere was luck. And sleep deprivation.
Man. Daylight savings was full of evil. We've spent all week trying to get caught up on that one elusive hour, which was resulted in much sleeping in, missed making of lunches, getting to places by the skin of our teeth, and being tired all week. It wasn't a bad week, though. Some things went well, and some things not so great, but all in all it's been good. I am all caught up on what DVDs of Smallville season 9 I can see (Oliver Queen, I heart you, but I will never get over the fact that you made Lex Luthor call you "Mister Queen" when you were kids), and because of my sister, I've been watching Supernatural. I've made it to season two. I have also made excellent progress on my crocheting projects, so there you go.
Kenpo was super crowded on Tuesday night. It was kind of awesome, and interesting to see - so many people there. And a couple of them girls, too, Ricky's daughters (one of whom has the same name as me), and all of the guys. We worked hard and learned lots, and I'm really starting to like this art. I need to train more. Much more. I am terribly lazy most days. Well, most days last week, due to my desires to sleep in much.
My apartment closed in Omaha. Finally. On Friday. It is done. That's finally of our plate. We took a hit on the price (not really, since we didn't pay for the thing), but there was no guarantee we would have managed a better price sometime down the line, and even if we did manage a better price, there was no guarantee the costs we'd incur in the meantime holding on to the place wouldn't make the hold-out worth it.
Thursday night was the Relief Society commemoration dinner (I know we call it the birthday dinner, but as my husband pointed out, organizations do not have birthdays). I went and sat with some ladies more or less my own age, but all of them were on a different team from me (my team being, naturally, team childless). There was good food, and an uplifting message, and nice music, and then the wonderfully quirky and unknowingly morbid green-frosted hand-shaped cookies. They were hand-shaped for a reason - we're called the Relief Society, and we're meant to be helping hands. But mostly they made me think of Llamas with Hats, and the hunger that only hands can satisfy, so naturally I had to bring some home to share with my husband, and we made silly jokes while we ate them.
I felt super lame on Thursday, because the weather has been erratic. Warm, but then cold and rainy, and today it flippin' well snowed. Two inches. In three hours. I was not a happy camper. But I had headaches and stayed home to work (and maybe had an SPN marathon the background), and apparently our bosses were super nice and bought us all two boxes of girl scout cookies each. So I asked a coworker of mine to squirrel two boxes of thin mints away for me in my desk. I ate almost an entire column of them myself while at work on Friday, which was silly, because I had free lunch at Buffalo Wild Wings (they have one here in town! Which means we can go watch the fights!) and shouldn't have been hungry. I got to watch Creighton play, and they won, which made me happy, and also apparently is helping me win the office bracket game thingie (beginner's luck, I swear). Friday was a good day - Cody and I went to the temple and then hung out after.
Cooking this week has been mostly good - my mum sent us some recipes we tried out. The chicken casserole I made a bit too watery, but the coconut chicken curry was good. The absolute winner was the upside down mushroom tartlets. Puff pastry, cheese, and mushrooms. That's the best of all worlds in food right there. The bak choy beef didn't come out so well - I think I used too much oil and it ended up being kinda slimy - but then I had lots of rice to eat for lunch today. I can't eat a lot of things, but I can put rice away like a pro.
Of course, I'll be hungry a couple of hours from now.
I had a lousy bout of insomnia last night, which reading nor catching up on the Secret Circle could cure. I have also been slow about writing anything new, although I did start on a present for a friend. Once I finish it, I can make it pretty and send it to her.
Saturday was super lazy. There was a lot of sleeping and napping and not a lot of getting things done till late, but in the end we got the laundry done, the house cleaned, and the grocery shopping done. I discovered a tragic shortage of leeks in the supermarkets around here. Everyone had mustard greens, but no leeks. Is something going on in Wales? Was there some sort of leek soup festival I missed? I have to go find some later this week. But seriously. Who eats that many leeks?
Cody's grandpa was in the hospital earlier this week, so we're going to and visit him and Grandma before we go hang out with Cody's parents.
I am super excited about getting this doll dress finished and getting the doll all dressed up. And then it's back to bobbin lace for me. I am ridiculously excited at getting better at that business. And it sort of lends itself to being relaxing. I don't have to pause and read instructions as much.
So...life is good. Really good. This week I will write letters. Last week I didn't, because I almost never get writing done when we're down with Cody's parents - usually I talk to his mom about whatever she's watching on Netflix. She's done with Bones now, I think. I should see if the newest season of Merlin is out yet. And also see if I can't convert her to SPN. I think she might like it - the boys would remind her of her boys, with the reckless driving and the guns.
