Day 781: Proud Mary
Jun. 27th, 2009 11:03 pmToday was a great day. I left my apartment by nine in the morning and didn't make it home till nine thirty, and some of my plans went awry, but it was a great summer day. I went to the institute and met up with Dental Student Dave, Dental Student Ashley (not to be confused with LLM Student Ashley, who is in a different ward) and Rae (not to be confused with SUU Rae). Rae and I were first, and Dave came soon after. We hung around and waited for Ashley, then booked it out to North Bend. We listened to music and talked. Partway there I thought I was lost, but it was only a matter of me not having driven far enough. Because everything in Nebraska is flat, I sort of imagine that things are closer than they are, but I've realized things here are more spread out than in Utah. In Utah, I get impatient if it takes me more than 45 minutes to drive up to Cedar. Here in Nebraska...it makes perfect sense that it takes me half an hour to drive to Wal-Mart. Go figure.
We got there in good time and headed out to the river with Bernadatte (our hostess), Kris, and Bernadette's friend Kayla. We dropped Bernadatte's car at the end zone and then took my car to the drop zone. We changed into swimsuits (Dave, our token boy, had to hike off into the woods) and then we inflated our tubes. They were small plastic things, neon pink - but for one blue one. We joked that Dave should have it, but Kris claimed it. And then into the river we went. At first it was slow going, walking out to the right spot - it was like walking through quicksand, and my legs are sore now - and then when we finally hit a current it was a little shallow, so my knees have been sanded. We paused on a sand bank to drink some water - Ashley started out toting the cooler, and then I traded her for it. Once we got past the sand bank and into deeper water, however, the current picked up, and I got to lie on the tube and coast, get some sun. It was cloudy for a decent part of the ride, but warm, and I loved it. It was peaceful and relaxing. I never realized how fast we were going until I watched the bank speed by.
Kris fell behind several times, so we waited on one of the sandbanks for her. And then the cooler popped open on my watch, so we had to scramble to chase down loose water bottles. We coasted some more until we saw the bridge where we'd left Bernadette's more (there was lots of talking, joking, Dave threatening to dunk Kayla, who thought I was the one of the lot who wasn't weird), and then we had to haul it across the river to the other bank so as to get out on the right side. That was hard. The cooler tried to steal me, so Ashley rescued me, and we walked together. I caught some of the current on the other side of the river. Near the end, a massive tree leaned over the river and formed a very cool, leafy bridge. So as I drifted beneath it, I sang a snatch of the Chili Peppers' "Under The Bridge" because I could.
We had a lot of fun, rolling on the river.
Afterwards we went to Bernadette's to change into real clothing, and then we went to her parents' place for food. I heated the baked beans, Rae prepped the salads, and Dave ran the grill. It was good food and lots of food and we had fun. Dave and Ashley slept on the ride home. I talked to Rae a bit. It was good times. We split up at the Institute, and I went to D&D, which was crazy fun as usual. I'm learning to take notes in there.
Afterwards I came home and talked to BenTen, Dad, and Daniel on the internet. It was fun to see Logan had posted for our WoD Mixed game on Gaia. But I'm tired and need sleep.
