Day 120: Old English sublime...
Feb. 27th, 2005 10:21 pmSo we had a rousing game of vampire. Bawdy as usual. Bit cruel. I baited Del and the Cub cruelly, so I suppose I deserved the punch in the arm once we were out of the loft. Heh heh.
I found me a live version of X-Japan's "Forever Love". It's my favorite song by them, if not my favorite song of all time at this point in my life. Not because it's a love song - because it's just beautiful. The first time I heard it on the radio I stopped what I was doing and just listened to it. It was gorgeous. "Say Anything" can weasel itself into my head too, but there's something about the softness in the piano and violins of "Forever Love" that gets me, and something in Toshi's voice. (I found out, Del - Yoshiki is the drummer and pianist for the songs and he writes them too - but Toshi sings and has a range of three octaves.) Toshi has a gorgeous voice. His range is bigger than mine. I should just give up trying to sing this song. But I found the live version and I listened to it. There were the ritual screams - there are always screams at a concert featuring men this gorgeous. And somehow I knew it before it happened, and Toshi began singing acapella. After the first verse the violins came in, and I was in heaven. I love violins. But there was something wrong with his voice. I was a touch trepidatious because some singers are terrible live compared to how they sound on a record. Toshi was on pitch and his voice sounded almost identical to his voice on record. But he wasn't holding his notes. I wondered if it was the last song and he was tired and he'd been straining his voice from singing all night. But as I listened I realized that he'd skipped the whole second verse. There was a huge violin break and no singing. And when he picked up on the second chorus he was crying between words. It was heartbreaking. I've heard how people can put emotion into their voices, but this just knocked me flat. Every time I hear that song live now I'm gonna get a little teary-eyed because you can just hear his heart breaking. It's fantastic. I didn't know anyone could sing like that...
