This week was okay. Survived. Worked a couple of really long days, twelve hours apiece, and then some really short days, so it all balanced out at the end, but I worked about sixty hours total, which was kinda rough. Covering court is hard times, but I continue to survive. One of my teens tested positive for opiates, and another went on the run, and I got to see a super cute but sadly tiny premie baby, and I hung out with the new prosecutor and we made awful jokes about slicing a baby better than Solomon would have, and overall it was the usual work madness, but that's okay. I survived.

Tuesday night Cody and I went to the ward summer party, which was fun. Had free food and got to talk to some people we don't usually get to talk to. I sat down and talked to a woman who teaches Sunday school but is otherwise kind of isolated because of her special needs daughter. Turns out before she became a stay-at-home mom she was a high-powered litigation attorney at a very fancy law firm. We talked about being ladies in the law trenches and how the space at the bar is still very much an old boys' club. She said everything people tell you about having disabled kids isn't true. God doesn't send you disabled kids because you're awesome parents. He sends them to you so you can become better parents. She was brilliant and funny and I feel bad for never taking the time to get to know her before.

On Wednesday my father-in-law was in town on business, so he and I went out to dinner, shot the breeze. It was good times. He's a chill guy, and also smart on the DL (like my husband, really - people assume they're dumb rednecks and they dress like it and talk like it but give them the right topic and they are knife-sharp). It was good to see him, and dinner was tasty, and he was also nice and bought.

Friday night, Naomi and I went to the ABBA cover band concert with the symphony. She came straight from work so we grabbed our picnic supplies and headed up the canyon as fast as we could. We chose chairs instead of blankets because we got there right as the concert started and the place was packed, so we were in the nosebleed section, and high up the bunny hill is rocky and uncomfortable, so it's better to have chairs. But we sang and danced and had a good time. Took almost an hour and a half to get out of the parking lot, and we were both home well after midnight, but we had a good time.

As Cody had another scout campout - just a short one, overnight - I lazed in bed on Saturday and finished one K-drama and started another, because why not? I'm still learning the pace of K-dramas and some of the conventions. At this point the pace of Japanese storytelling in anime is normal to me, and it doesn't bother me, but sometimes I just kinda don't get the rhythm of storytelling in K-dramas, but I am learning. And it's been fun.

Today at church I finished knitting that sweater for my niece, and also Cody spoke. He really is charming when it comes to public speaking, can get people to laugh. I was proud of how well he did. Because he was speaking we had to for sure get there on time, and I was hoping to sit next to our sweet old neighbor for once, but his usual pew was empty. The man who sits on the pew behind him mentioned he'd been absent two weeks in a row, so we went and checked on him after church, and he has a back injury, can't make the walk from the church parking lot to the chapel. He talked to us about the horses he rode as a kid, including how he rode one to school, and that was common enough that the school had a corral and a shed for horse supplies while kids were at school. He talked about getting snowed in as a kid and having to help push the school bus over snow drifts. He's a nice old man but he's kinda fading; his memory isn't what it used to be, and I know he misses his wife a lot.

Cody has been very sweet about helping me clean and do laundry lately, so I appreciate that a lot. Also we went target shooting a bit, figured out how to get to a new, less crowded shooting spot, so that's nice.

Goal checkin

Fitness! Still lame, but I made my goals one day.

Spirituality! Better but still not great. The people in our ward are pretty amazing though.

Work! Still lame. Still feeling kinda drained. Hard to care. And it's so hot lately, which is even more draining.

Writing! I continue to challenge myself, trying new genres and concepts, but my original stuff is just...kinda going nowhere, no lies...

This week I have possibly two concerts and fun times at a theme park with friends. We shall see how it goes!
