Wow. Suuper late on my weekly update. And to think I used to update almost daily. And then I got married...

Last week was kinda miserable. I was feeling kinda sniffly and sneezy Sunday night, and I definitely had a cold Monday, but I had a light enough schedule that it kinda didn't matter. Tuesday I felt a little worse, but I again had a light schedule, so I did my best to tough it out.

Which was probably not the greatest idea. I was supposed to go to my cute little client's band concert, but I was sick. Super sick. Probably flu sick. Cody came home and we went to get dinner together, and the entire time I was shivering even though I was bundled in my heaviest snowboarding jacket. Pretty sure I had a fever. So I was sad and miserable and cuddling tissue boxes all that night, and the next day I called in sick. Didn't have a lot of hearings but I had hearings with babies, and it seemed best not to be sick around them.

Dingo stepped on my phone (again) and I had to get a new screen, so even though I was sick and miserable I ventured out to get the phone fixed. It snowed a bit but didn't stick. The guys at the phone repair place took pity on me and repaired the screen fast and put a screen protector on it for free, which was super sweet of them. I was so sick on Wednesday that the dogs didn't even try to get me to go for a walk with them.

When I woke Thursday I was feeling pretty good, but we had a nasty inversion all that week so the weather was hideous and the air was pretty much poison, so hiking through the cold with two dogs was not on the table, and I thought I was good, but then at about 3PM I just...hit a wall, and the cold made my head all fuzzy, and I was just...stupid. Not a good lawyer at all. And I had a fever again.

Luckily Friday was scheduled to be chill. My first meeting of the day ended up lasting three hours (it was scheduled for two and that was rough enough) and we had our work Christmas party, and then I went home.

Cody and I spent most of the weekend sick and working on Christmas presents. Pat came over on Saturday to help Cody with knives and also to work on their side project, which is to build a replica of Mjolnir because why not? We ate pizza and watched the fights.

Sunday was our church Christmas program, and for some reason I still cannot fathom I had to lead the music for the women's number, but then we both went home in sad misery. Cody has not caught my cold - he never does catch my colds - but I think the poor air quality did a number on him too.

This week was...rough. Still hitting a 3PM stupid wall, but I am surviving all the same. It's the last week of work before Christmas, so naturally things are going insane as we all try to wrangle last-minute Christmas visits for all the kids for whom it is safe to do so.

Sunday before last, Cody's grandpa had a massive heart attack, and he's too old and fragile for surgery, so they kept him for a week to stabilize him and then sent him home with a hospice nurse this Sunday. Apparently Cousin Kit split from his baby mama (I say baby mama but their kid is in...third grade now?) and so the family hired her to watch Grandpa during the day. Cody's parents come down on Tuesday to bring us the van so we can drive it south for Christmas (and fit two dogs and all the stuff that traveling with two dogs necessitates). We took Cody's mom out to dinner, and she told us all the family news.

In short, the family is a bit of a disaster.

Cody's dad lifted a door all by himself and should not have and has a hernia.

Cody's older brother broke up with his girlfriend and is very sad (though we all agree it was for the best).

Cody's younger brother broke a rib while saving his girlfriend from a drunken fall.

And grandpa slipped into a coma.

Tuesday was a drama-filled day, no lies.

Cody spent all last week pulling late nights and slaving to get a paper done for his boss (his boss not having given them very useful parameters), and after he turned it in, his boss didn't like it, insisted they scrap it, and he just ended up writing the paper himself. Needless to say, Cody was pretty frustrated.

Wednesday was a long day. Neither Cody nor I slept well the night before because where there is bits of snow there is bad driving, and where there is bad driving there are sirens, and where there are sirens Ivy and Dingo have to sing along.

So I limped into court late Wednesday morning and spent it putting out work fires, writing children's stories, and prepping for my two-hour afternoon trial. Which of course ran long. We won, but it was only half a victory, because the case is open for at least another sixty days. And then I had a hearing after that, and had to run errands after that. Cody was home when I got home, and his mother called with the news: Grandpa had passed. Still not sure when the funeral is.

Cody and I had supper, and then I ventured out in the mini blizzard to run some last-minute errands before we leave.

Because of the nasty turn the weather took (but yay for snowboarding!), I was awake at about 3 AM with shoulder pain (my old jujitsu injury coming back to bite me) and a migraine. Not nearly as bad as ones I've had in days past, but after about an hour I crawled out of bed, ate most of a sleeve of crackers, drank a soda, and took some migraine meds. The crackers were enough that I didn't get hideously nauseous, and I fell asleep on the couch. Woke exhausted like you do from being in pain all night, and I made it in court on time for morning hearings. Three hearings, one by video conference. Only one of them was mine.

But then the judge had his annual Christmas lunch, which was nice. I talked to one of the prosecutors who used to be a commercial diver for an oil rig, which was pretty cool (another prosecutor had gone on a scuba vacation and was sharing around his dive photos, which sparked the conversation about diving). I work with such cool people.

I have drug court this afternoon, and then...Christmas break!

Chances are I won't update till after Christmas, and I suspect next weekend we'll be with my husband's family for grandpa's funeral, so...Happy Holidays, all!

I've received lovely holiday cards and delicious cookies (thanks, [personal profile] brumeier!) and gifts, and for all the madness that I have survived, it's going to be a good holiday season. For some reason when it's snowy I like to listen to classical Christmas music, and while I was out and about in the snow I listened to the Chanticleer Christmas on the radio, and it was lovely.
