Last week was a very long week. Five days in court. Tiring. I was good for Monday through Thursday - got out of bed at a good time, worked out, was at work on time. Friday morning I woke up, and I was just...done.

Had to pull a girl. She'd tried to commit suicide. Her mom responded appropriately at first, then inappropriately. She'd broken up with her boyfriend, and the upset damaged her already fragile emotional and mental state. So I talked to her about how things were going (she is desperate to go home and tried to make it sound like she was doing better than she was). I asked her some difficult questions about her boyfriend (difficult because talking about him was difficult). In exchange, I offered her carte blanche to ask me any questions she wanted about the boys I once dated. She asked if I'd ever turned a boyfriend gay.

I failed to explain that you cannot "turn" someone gay.

I did, however, explain that I once dated a boy who self-identified as bi, and as far as I know he hasn't dated any girls since we broke up nine years ago (mostly that means he's had two long-term relationships with boys since then), but I did not "turn" him.

She laughed. It counted for something.

Saturday morning, Cody and I actually attempted to sleep in some. We worked in the garden, and then we ended up once again going to Buffalo Wild Wings to meet one of Cody's friends, Josh. We ended up calling Angela to join us, and then Cody's brother Kip came along as well, so we had lots of tasty food and chatted (poor Angela is going to start thinking we're trying to set her up with Cody's single friends, which isn't true). We ended up back at our place looking up Internet details on the Mayweather versus Pacquiao fight and watching Enter the Dojo videos in the background and laughing a lot. Angela spent some time with the violin, and we did briefly dink around with music.

Somehow we have turned into a weird, amorphous group of friends, full of nerds, ninjas, and lawyers.

Monday was an all right day in court. There was a hilarious moment where one attorney (who no one likes) actually tried to correct the judge on a matter of law. There are times when an attorney can and should respectfully disagree with a ruling a judge has made, but there is a way to do it properly, and he did not. We all tried not to laugh. The judge was amazingly patient about it, but I could see afterwards that he was kind of annoyed.

I get so annoyed by people sometimes. I need to learn not to let my anger consume me.

On Friday I supervised a visit for the first time. It was strange and kind of bizarre, sitting on the other side of a one-way mirror and watching a woman play with her son. Because we were stuck at the DCFS supervised visit room, the kid got bored pretty quickly, and in an effort to let the mom have a full hour with her kid, I broke out the deck of cards I keep in my purse and we played Go Fish (I don't really remember the rules well, but we altered them some to let the kid win). Inspired by the admittedly fun card game, I picked up two decks of Magic cards and two decks of Pokemon cards for kids to play with when things get slow.

When that woman came to see her kid, she brought a sad, used, dirty toy she'd bought off of one of the other tenants at the motel where she's living, and she'd bought it with bus tokens. It was heartbreaking, to see her offer the toy to her kid, the only thing she could offer him under the circumstances.

Last night I finished up the laundry and packed my bag for Europe. There are still some things I need to gather, and then Cody and I need to sit down and also pack his bag. We go to Idaho this weekend to drop off the dogs. Hope they'll be okay without us. Hope they don't forget us.

I got my new Bamboo Fineline stylus, and I am super excited.

Here's to surviving the week before vacation.
