This week was kinda crazy. I spent the beginning of the week working late most days to finish off the war book my boss had assigned for me, as well as helping out with research and loans. Poor Cody ran himself ragged down at the forge to finish off Justin's wedding present (a genuinely beautiful knife, complete with handcarved wooden handle). There was one unfortunate moment when I woke up and Cody wasn't home and I totally panicked and figured he'd died in a car crash on the way home, but all was well.

At Kenpo this week we watched some of the little kids test. Carl was there for the first time in a long time, and we spent some time catching up. He's getting ready for his senior year of high school and is looking to test for his black belt this fall. I'm slowly doing better on stuff - I just need to be more disciplined about getting up a couple of mornings a week and drilling the basics. Now that I'm getting into some manipulation techniques, stance work is important so I don't lose my balance and take myself down along with my opponent.

The best part of this week, naturally, was skipping out on some of the craziest parts of the Texas loan queue and going to visit friends. First was my friend Justin's wedding. (Does anyone who reads this remember Justin? Dated him while I was in high school and also in law school? Eve Six'd him pretty hard in law school?) I've never been to the Provo Temple or seen the MTC, so that was pretty cool. Cody had some interesting memories of the MTC and the temple. Best of all, I got to see Mal, who I haven't seen since my wedding. (We had plans to go to the USF together, but then I had that fight with my mom and things fell apart.) We hung out at her house between the temple ceremony and the reception and got all caught up, which was nice.

The temple ceremony was beautiful. I mean, I guess the ordinance is the same every time - same words and whatnot. But the sealer had some wonderful things to say that helped me get some new perspective on my marriage and that I was really glad to hear. He emphasized how we're supposed to move forward as a couple - that our obedience and sacrifices are all as a couple. I guess up to this point I've been cruising along as if we're roommates who love each other a lot, but my spiritual progression has continued to be a solo act. It helped me recommit to important parts of our married life, like family prayer. I was surprised at how super happy Justin's mom was to see me, but then her oldest boy was getting married, so she was probably over the moon. One of Justin's grandmothers was pretty unhappy to see me, but what can you do? Also Justin's youngest brother went from short and pudgy to the tallest of the boys and rail-thin. I didn't recognize him at first.

The reception was pretty awesome - there was live singing and...a martial arts demonstration! Justin and a bunch of his friends were on a demo team in Korea for gumdo (kamdo? I'm a bit iffy on the pronunciation), and so there were lots of swords. It was pretty darn awesome. I'm guessing most of Justin's relatives who just had the faint notion that he was into "martial arts" were in for a pretty big surprise. But they put on a pretty good show, and we had a good time.

We stayed the night at my sister's place, and the next day we ran around town. We went to lunch with Angela to celebrate her new job (even if it is just a temp), and I met up with my mom. We talked legal responsibilities for me while she's out of town. Also, my baby niece is starting to walk, so I took her for a brief walk, which was super fun. She's adorable, and she smiles at me and likes to hug me now and everything. She's a little leery of Cody, but then Audi the chihuahua decided she likes Cody, so that was new. We went and hung out with my bestest college friend Ericka...and her brand new fiance!

He proposed to her on top of the city library with a copy of Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine - he'd glued the pages together and carved out a space in the center where he put the ring. Totally perfect for those two. We were supposed to play a run of VtM Wild West, but just ended up sitting around talking and catching up. Poor Cody was probably bored out of his skull, and then the cat got after him all night, but it was so, so good to see my friends from college. The best part about my college friends is we can meet up after months of silence and have long, meaningful conversations. It was good to see them.

On Saturday Cody and I went to lunch with my mom, sister, brother-in-law, and niece, and that was great - I haven't been to Sweet Tomatoes in a long time, and I totally love their breadsticks.

Cody and I read a Dresden Files novel together on the way home (when I wasn't falling asleep), and all in all, we had a good weekend.

Ericka is getting married next year, and I'm super excited for her.
