I didn't update for two weeks. I know. For shame. For the two people who even still read this (including my mother), the absence must have been agonizing. But...there was a reason.
Life has been kind of crazy.
Last weekend Cody and I went to watch the new Men in Black movie, which was awesome and so much better than the second one that it's best to pretend the second one doesn't exist and just skip straight to the third. Afterwards we went to Leo's to get some pizza, and Cody's dad wasn't there. We figured he was off for the night to celebrate his wedding anniversary, and everyone was super weird with us, like it was bizarre we'd be out on the town wanting pizza. And then they told us the truth - Cody's dad wasn't there because Grandma had been in a car crash and passed away.
So we spent the weekend with family, and most of this past week with family. The viewing was on Tuesday night, and the Wednesday was on funeral (my boss was awesome and gave me a half day of PTO so I could go). It seemed like the entire town and several other nearby towns showed up for the viewing, and the funeral was well-attended, too. There was beautiful music - some Cody's aunt wrote, that her children sang, as well as Wicked's "For Good", which will never be the same for me - and also five different kinds of funeral potatoes. The service was full of funny memories, because Grandma was full of spice, and also amazingly intelligent and hardworking, defying all the stereotypes of a woman of her generation, and everyone who knew her thought well of her, if also feared her.
Thursday we also spent time with the family, which was actually kind of awesome. We ended up at Grandma's house, serenading each other on the piano and guitar. Cody's cousin Nate is super sweet and very talented - he played some of his own arrangements and compositions for us, and Cousin Jen played Blackbird and a Patsy Cline song. We all ended up singing Hallelujah together when Cody played the piano, and then Cody played Wish You Were Here on piano while Nate played the guitar. It was super fun.
Friday night we went out to dinner with my boss, which was an adventure and a half. We had sushi, and a good night. We know Adelina and Shawn really well, and Fred and his wife are super cool. Yesterday I spent all day getting ready for the summer "Walk & Talk", which is basically a ward party at a different person's house every Sunday for the summer. It was mine and Cody's first grown-up party. I baked about six dozen cookies, and we had pink lemonade. We figured, since there hadn't been many people at the last one, there wouldn't be many people at ours, but it seemed like at least half the ward put in an appearance at one point or another. I still barely know anyone's names, but they're all really nice, and I'm glad this is our first family ward.
I also got sustained as the Sunday School teacher for the 12 and 13 kids, right when they're starting to test a new curriculum. So...I'm a little freaked out. But there you go. I'm going to have to put in lots more work than is ordinarily required of Sunday School teachers, but I think it will be good for me.
Also, Cody's brothers talked him into running the Tough Mudder in Tooele in October, so I am now Cody's running partner. We'll see how well that goes for me.
