Day 965: A Monday Morning Hell Yeah

So...to recap what went down last week before I get started in on this week.
Last week...belt testing was cancelled, which resulted in Angela and I watched way too much Stargate on Wednesday night together, which was fine by me. On Thursday I moped around and did my best to see about getting replies to jobs and other fine things, and on Thursday night I went to the temple to do more baptisms. It was mostly Spanish night, which was an interesting deal. I got a line on a potential client, but I haven't heard from him, so I will call him back. As it stands...I call it a sign. Go solo until something better comes along. Thursday was a pretty good day overall.
Friday I ran down to the courthouse to get the file for today's hearing, but it was locked in the judge's office, so there you go. I ended up going grocery shopping with Kile. Apparently in the wake of his grandmother's death his grandfather and aunt have decided to cease assisting in feeding him, so I took him "grown-up" grocery shopping for the first time. I realized that, in the last little while, between cooking for the missionaries and myself more often, I have become fairly grown-up with my eating habits myself, and my mother taught me lots about grocery shopping, so I was able to help Kile all right.
After I got done with Kile Jason came over and we talked about his upcoming child support hearing. I looked through the file some but need to go through it in more detail to get set up. I went to training, which was all blocking and maybe two combat techniques, but I'm lame at blocking during sparring (but okay during drills), so it was good exercise. Since class had been cancelled Tuesday night, the gymnasts were making up for the time they missed, so while we were on the mats they were on the beams and bars and the boys were distracted, poor things. Mr. Lemmons was there, which was the first time in a long time, so that was nice. Afterwards Angela and I had Italian chicken and pasta and watched more Stargate.
Also, I didn't get the job in Holdredge, so that's that. I don't have to move, which is a relief, but this job thing isn't looking so hot. I just need to rustle up enough of a solo practice so I can pay bills. (Mom thought I might have got turned down because I'm "so small". What?)
Saturday was a good day - went training with Sensei Green and the gang and, oddly enough, one of the guys knows people who need legal help, so I might have some more potential clients from that angle, which would be pretty cool (he was surprised at how old I was and also that I was a lawyer). Sensei Green gave me some more advice about non-verbal communication (I really do need to take a class in that business. Seriously) and he also gave me some GM gear. Glen walked us through some gun safety, which led me and Melissa to decide to have a group outing to the shooting range sometime just to get some gun basics down. Government things I need to apply for: notary public magic stamp and gun permit. Woohoo!
Afterwards I went craft shopping, and then I came home and worked on cases a bit (re: fretted about my hearing this morning) and then Angela came over. We were going to go clubbing but Val had a nasty reaction to some meds and Amber (not the lawyer) was trapped in bad weather in her small town, so we watched more Stargate and ate popsicles. It was good. Also, I spent some time online with a beta for that one novel I wrote, which was super fun, both of us poking through the scene and chatting back and forth. Ericka and I have a start on our novel, and I am kinda freaked out at how dark she made it, but let's see what happens.
Sunday was a good day. Got up early to do useful things like read my scriptures and bake mom's peach cobbler for break the fast, and then I carted Will and Mitch the undergrad to church. It was a good Sunday - we have some new kids, some familiar returning friendly faces, and also it was fast and testimony meeting, which was awesome. After church our new relief society presidency met for the first time, and then I had to bail and run home to grab the peach cobbler for break the fast. After we ate (I made friends with Danielle the occupational speech therapist) I spent some quality time with a piano, and I might have a handle on Rufus Wainwright's version of "Hallelujah". I was pretty pleased at the progress I made. Then I went home and wrote letters, tatted, listened to conference talks, and called Cody.
This morning I was up bright and early to get down to the courthouse. I had to file an entry of appearance for Jason's case before I headed up to juvie court, and then I sat around fretting till my client came. He sounds like a good guy, just a bit of a flake. A guy I went to law school with is stepping up into the juvie pool, so the attorney I was against is getting transferred to felonies. The attorney I went up against? Looked like Ian Durant. He was very sweet and nice, though, so that's good. And I was terrified through the entire hearing, but it went pretty much the way Amber said it would, and I don't think I screwed up, and now I'm excited to help my client. So...there you go! I have a real client. After I got done at court I ran down to the bank and opened up trust and operating accounts. The guy who helped me is the son of an attorney and he was very sweet. On my way back to the garage I called mom to tell her the hearing was a success (as in I didn't screw up) and while I was in the elevator I ran into this dude. He talked to me a bit. He's an ex-army employee of OPS who just got divorced. I couldn't tell if he was hitting on me or might want a lawyer (he pointed out he was single, which was kinda weird). He was surprised I was a lawyer (he thought I was all of twenty), and commented several times that I must be pretty bright to be where I am so young (Creighton's 3-3 program actually churns out a lot of attorneys at 24). So...that was weird. But...yay! My first hearing alone. I might get the hang of this solo thing.
Now I need to work on Jason's case, call back that potential guardianship client, and also make sure I'm ready for the game tonight. I am super, super excited. For the game. For life. For a Monday morning. I'm giving myself a lunch break, though, probably to involve Bones and lace.
