Day 934: Monday Craziness

That'll teach me to plan anything.
I planned on sleeping in Monday just to spite the other law students. Didn't happen. I stayed up crazy late on Sunday night talking to Cody over Skype and on the phone (I got to meet his brother Kieran, as it were, over Skype. He's like a younger, darker, more hyper and slightly drunker version of Cody). I figured if I stayed up late it'd help me sleep in. Also, I was up at half five on Sunday to make an emergency run to the airport for Xiao Qian, who has quit Nebraska for good. I tried to take a nap but was awakened by a well-meaning Bernadette (who was surprised at my accent; I growled at her "this is what I really sound like" and felt bad for it). All that exhaustion should have helped me sleep in. It didn't. I was up early writing letters and running errands. And run errands I did.
I learned that CSI guys never look like they do on TV, and the CSI guy who fingerprinted me for my Nebraska Bar Application was a fashionably dressed pretty-boy with a badge and no gun and tattoos under his long sleeves. He looked dubious as to my ability to be a lawyer and I was dubious as to his ability to hold his cookies upon seeing a dead body. But maybe that's why he's the fingerprint guy.
I learned that Costco is awesome. I bought a couch there, and they held it for me all day until Lindsey and Greg could come help move it with Lindsey's truck, and while I was waiting for Lindsey to show up (I wasn't there all day; no, I went to the post office and worked on Ericka's birthday present and other such things) I had dinner there. Pizza. It was tasty.
I learned that I can be a horrible human being and take advantage of guys who have had crushes on me. I got D&D Kile to come help move the massive couch (and I did feel bad, because it wouldn't fit in the lift, which meant he and Jason and Greg had to haul it up four floors' worth of stairs to get it into my flat). I got Jason (from 1L, who bought me a jeweled bracelet for Christmas that year) to also come help move the couch. He wanted the old blue loveseat for his place, so we shoved it into his truck. And then I got Sensei Raymond to come teach self-defense for FHE.
It was weird, seeing him quiet and friendly. I was fully expecting him to use his black belt voice, but it didn't happen. He was friendly, but then it was probably the first time in a long time he was around that many students his own age. He beat the snot out of Ryan, which made the kids wince, but really, Ryan is his punching dummy, so there you go. He also picked me up with one arm, which entertained the hell out of my friends. I hate being picked up, as a general rule. (Amber said he was shorter than she'd imagined. Apparently my dating trend has moved toward nicer, shorter guys. Go figure.)
Possible risk of having Sensei Raymond come to FHE? Kile may follow me to training. I think I understand a bit of why Chanita doesn't like for boys to follow her to the kung fu studio. The dojo is my happy place, as odd as that may sound. I go there to see friends, to work frustrations out, to learn new things. I'll be tense the entire time he's there, which is uncool.
I learned that, hey, the concept of ladies' night D&D works (even though we no longer play D&D and are back to WoD). How does it work? Two of my players are dating now, which is kind of adorable but frustrating in-game as they get distracted having their characters flirt while the rest of the characters stage an internecine war. Also, allowing girls to be much prettier in-game than they are in real life? Can lead to trouble. But hey, it's a game, and a fantasy game at that, so once in a while I will indulge their egos.
I learned that there is a difference between pain and discomfort, and what most people call pain is actually discomfort, and what most people call crippling is, well, pain. When I was helping some of the girls with their defense techniques last night, most of them hesitated putting on the pressure for fear of hurting each other, so I decided to let them practice on me, because I can take a decent amount of discomfort. They had to know what it was really like, turning their wrists in to a choke, but they were so afraid of hurting each other...and hurting me. And then they were horrified at how much "pain" I could take. I explained that what they call pain is just discomfort, and I don't like it, but if I feel it in a fight I can keep moving. Pain...pain stops me from moving. I'm done. I'm hurt. I'll call tap. Every time Sensei Raymond did something to Ryan that was a kick, the kids would cringe, but he wasn't kicking Ryan hard. (I did remark to the girls that if that's what ninjas do to their friends, imagine what they do to their enemies.)
Best part of the day? Coming home and sprawling out on my new couch and talking to Cody. He played some on his bass for me, and we talked about our respective days. I promised to write him while I'm in Europe. He has asked for a shiny new afghan for Christmas, and I've got a pattern all picked out. I need to finish a whole host of other gifts first, though. I can do that.
I will do useful things today, like buy supplies for his afghan and stuff to protect my couch. I will work on my application and on gifts, and overall life will be very shiny and dandy. Then training tonight.
Now Sensei Raymond knows I play D&D.
How many push-ups is that going to be?
