Day 822: Taking Care of Business

That's right. Seriously. I've been working pretty darn hard the last few days.
On Tuesday I sort of officially got my closing done. Whee! Melilli really liked it, which made me feel pretty good. The part he likes best is a part I came up with, as opposed to acquiescing neatly and freaking him out. I'm starting to do that thing I did first year where I'm concentrating, and then my brain shuts down on me, and then my handwriting goes all wobbly and I'm semi-conscious, awake but trapped in my own unmoving body. Not a cool feeling.
Wednesday was a long, long day. But a productive day nonetheless. I made it all the way through the M&D reading I needed to do, and then all through the hundred-odd pages of reading for Advanced Con Law I'd been dreading. Lunch was the JRCLS help the 1Ls talk. And...wow. So many kids showed up. Last year maybe forty kids showed up. This year we definitely created a fire hazard. We passed out candy and got to watch the 1Ls look pretty darn terrified. I went to classes. I totally confess that I watched House between ACL and Juvie Law. It was amazing. House. Not Juvie Law. Although for our next Juvie Law paper we get to read novels. I've been looking to reread The Outsiders anyway, which is a novel chock-full of juvenile delinquency, so I'm pretty excited to have an excuse to read for fun. Prosecution was super awesome times. I took four pages of notes all about voir dire and learned some really interesting stuff from the teacher. She's super cool. This semester I'm learning more about litigation than I thought possible, and I'm totally digging it. Also, I got home in time to watch Criminal Minds, which all kinds of made me smile.
Then my mom, who is the bestest mom in the world, helped me memorize. I guess near the end I had it pretty good, because she asked me if I was reading it. Memorizing a cross is a lot harder than memorizing a direct because on cross you impeach words, not concepts, so I have to track the language of a witness's prior statement very closely.
Today trial practice went well. We were a little slow on the uptake sometimes, and Melilli got a little annoyed with us, but he wasn't vicious. The best part was when I was on the witness stand and my partner was crossing me about having accused the Dean (in the case) of adultery. Pretty much about the time we got to those questions, the Dean (the actual dean of the law school) had stepped into the conference room where we practice to get some coffee, and he looked utterly cornered, like we were accusing him of cheating on his wife. (He's not even married, so it was pretty hilarious.) I am pretty much dreading memorizing my closing because it's so evil long. Halfway through I got really, really sick of my voice. Melilli thinks I look "cute" when I'm being sarcastic. Awesome. I have the litigation formidability of a kitten.
Lunch was good times, and Kim and Sandy came to chill with us for a while. M&D today was...interesting. We talked about violence between spouses, and our professor started teaching us all the ways to not get our clients killed when they're attempting to divorce abusive spouses, because apparently lethal violence is most likely when divorce is imminent. If I wanted to avoid family law now, I'm pretty sure I'm never practicing there. Ever. Not that criminal law doesn't carry the risk of getting witnesses killed either, but...whoa. Apparently next week we'll cover how not to get ourselves and our law office staff killed by angry violent spouses.
Woohoo.
I came home and practiced the drums for a bit, read some Juvie Law, took a nap, went to an HOA meeting. I still have homework, but goodness gracious, I am all kinds of taking a break. Right now.
I've been productive and feel good about it.
Also, it's supposed to snow this weekend. Where did autumn go?
