Day 802: It's Been a While

This weekend was crazy. Good times, a lot of them. Fun. Baptisms Saturday morning, some cooking and random chores, me trying to buy a book that's still not in even though I've had the first session of that class, and then...a soccer game. An exhibition match between our men's soccer team and a local all-star Latin team. Dental Student Dave was there, along with Lawyer Amber, Will, new 1L Zach, Dan, Nurse Janine, Angela, and a whole bunch of people, including my parents. It was an awesome game, and our team owned 7-nil, which was hardcore. Afterwards my parents went back to my place and the rest of us went to the Amsterdam down in Dundee. Even though I wasn't hungry, Angela and I ended up sharing a kabob salad, which was good, and then we went back to Will's place to talk about our hobby band. We poked through his books and picked songs (My Girl, by the Temptations, Don't Fear The Reaper by BOC, and Pretty Fly for a White Guy by the Offspring) and then just sat around and talked. Till 3 a.m. That boy is bad for a girl's sleeping schedule.
Sunday was church with my parents at my ward, and then dinner with the sister missionaries, which was pretty awesome because it was mom-cooked food and super tasty, and also Dad gave me my annual school blessing. I think I wrote twelve letters or something like it on Sunday, trying to catch up with the mail I missed while I was gone (and I still owe on a letter).
I got up uber early today to see my parents off, and then I went to school.
The class breakdown isn't so bad. Trial team with Melilli this far hasn't been so bad, but he has warned us that it'll be quite the workload in the meantime. Today was just some remedial witness exam, and I'm actually pretty terrified, because I kept screwing it up, and we have to show what we practiced tomorrow. After practice got out early, I got my parking permit and other shiny things and had lunch in the Corner (which some 1L had tried to adversely possess first thing in the morning), and we got to talk to our usual gang of friends. After lunch I had Advanced Con Law, which was...like no class I've had before.
First day, first real class, and I totally fell asleep during lecture. Because the professor does not believe in the Socratic method. He also clearly despises the younger Con Law profs as he rather blatantly denigrated what they taught us, so it looks like I'm going to have to unlearn what I learned long enough to pass his class. But he's an interesting guy, a dramatic speaker. I managed to wake up in time to take a really good rally of notes near the end, but there are definite squiggle marks on my earlier notes where I clearly fell asleep. Lawyer Amber recommends taking my laptop and playing games, but I'm attempting to go Laptop free this year.
After class, since I had no studying, Angela and I did a quick-fix on the JRCLS board so we could get things in order for the new year, and then I had Juvie law. Which was interesting. I've never had Brooks before, although Jordan tells me she's pretty cool. I like her, I think. She's funny and engaging while still being professional, and she makes me think instead of want to sleep, which was nice. We talked about the differences between the juvenile and adult criminal justice systems, and we talked stereotypes, poor kids versus rich kids and the ways in which both of them could be disadvantaged. (Apparently I can spin a pretty good yarn for a disadvantaged real kid, but then I've watched a lot of episodes of Law & Order where Rich Kids go bad. And I worked at Integrity House. And I knew my share of JDs from wealthy families.)
Afterwards, though, when I got home, I was just...exhausted. Mentally and physically. I barely wanted to stir off the sofa to make myself any supper. But I made some anyway, watched an episode of Alias, and then went to FHE, which was surprisingly awesome. At first I felt sort of bad for making Levi give the lesson, because he sort of has an obvious speech impediment, but his lesson really struck me, and I was glad he gave it. Afterwards was dance lessons with Josh, in anticipation of this Friday's dance. I danced with Anthony, Nate (not the doctor or the one in China), and Jordan, who was a surprisingly good dancer. And then I ran off to play D&D.
We were loud and raucous, but boy we had fun. However, I am filled with some trepidation, because both of the boys are leaving, which means our circle will be all girls, most of whom are utter neophytes, and one girl I barely know at all and who made me largely uncomfortable with her random violations of my personal space and overall...I'm not sure what. But hey, players are players, and I hope we all become friends.
I hit a spot of maudlin as I came home (listening to the title song of this entry, oddly enough), so I think I'm just going to crawl into bed and hope my internal compass shakes off the magnet storm.
Here's to not getting screeched at by Mellili tomorrow.
