Day 1248: Stumbling Toward Summer
May. 23rd, 2016 01:05 pmThe sky cannot decide what season it is, whether to be hot or cold, rainy or dry, windy or still, so last week it decided to be all of those things and then some.
Work was work. I had some pretty chill days, some cases blow up in my faces (crazy parents, crazy kids, crazy grandparents, it's all variations on a theme).
The week was good, overall. Got good writing done. Went dancing. Went to the doctor and got some help for my knee and my ankle.
Scouts was rained out, so instead of going on our treasure hunt, we stayed in the garage and Cody taught the boys about the ways of simple machines, like levers and pulleys and wheels. Thursday night was a really fun Relief Society activity - there was cooking and card-making and improv theater games (hands down our group was the most fun for improve games) and lots and lots of cookies.
On Fridaym morning Kip and I walked to the grocery store together, Kip because he was awake and his sleep schedule was messed up and me in search of scout supplies. Our quest was unfruitful, and we spotted a couple of kids meandering down the sidewalk while we walked, and we both wondered why they weren't in school. True fact: I'm getting old. Friday night Cody and I went on a date, went out for dinner and to see Batman versus Superman, which Cody hated but I had fun with. On Saturday I went shopping with Angela, which was super good times. We bought some scout supplies but also a new dress to wear to weddings this summer, and much-needed work shoes (the shoes were on sale!).
Kip took Cody and his professor to the airport for the business trip, and Cody sent me periodic text messages so I'd know he was all right.
Saturday night was my friend Shelly's bachelorette party, which was us going out to a fancy restaurant downtown, then going back to her friend's place and watching Shelly open her gifts and playing random games, like pin the hose on the fireman (true fact: Shelly's art teacher fiance drew the fireman and the hoses for her). We giggled at the raunchy gifts (and had a lot to say about the sex positions coloring book, which was full of positions that looked frankly injurious but had interesting backgrounds, like the hot air balloons and the medieval castle and, most memorably, the unicorn).
Sunday I went to church on my own but spent most of the day huddled with the dogs, writing. Went visiting teaching for a spell and then ended up taking our friend Pat to the airport so he could rent a car and head out of state for some job. So Pat and I talked all the way north, and then I talked to Cody's mom south, and then to my mom. Went to bed at a reasonable time, I think.
Got up early and walked around the cemetery to plot clue locations for the great scout treasure hunt. Today has been kinda frustrating (variations on a theme) but I've gotten some good writing done. I think Cody presents today, because he texted me and asked me to wish him luck. He's pretty stressed out and I'm worried about him.
I am pretty busy this week, which should help me not hang around the house moping over Cody being gone. Dad is gone, too, and when I called Mum we were in the same boat, mopey because our men are gone, taking comfort in our canine companions, and totally failing to be as productive as we thought we'd be while the men are gone.
I have a new case, a genuine Cinderella. It makes me pretty sad. But I think this week will be okay, so here goes!
