Day 839: All Or Nothing
Nov. 25th, 2009 11:40 pmThat seems to about sum up my recent life. For a while there, I was giving it my all, so focused on Buffalo and trial team that I started waking myself up in the middle of the night from night terrors about being overruled. Now that the competition is done, my mind insists that I do nothing.
I seem to be succeeding.
I was a client for the client counseling competition on Monday night, which was pretty interesting as far as law school experiences go. I was too compliant and helpful my first round, but by the second round I'd pretty much broken into the role, and according to the judge, I was pretty darn good for a first-timer.
I rushed away from school and down to the Institute for Ladies' Night. And Ladies' night it was. I hung around and talked to Liz while Sara and Kris ran for snacks. They returned - with heaven. Lots of chocolate, all different kinds, and also Martinelli, so we feasted. And gamed. I'm resurrecting old NPCs and things, but since these girls are unfamiliar with the world I've built the impact isn't nearly as awesome. Also, I thought they were more on the up-and-up with the mythology. None of them get that the head Chantry mage, Emrys, is, well...Emrys. Merlin. Or that the armor-clad body with the red-dragon shield on the armor plinth in the middle of Emrys's cave is, well, King Arthur. All the humor sucked out of a good plot detail.
But whatever. We had an awesome time. I took them to Elspeth Vincenzo's place, the scary Lasombra woman I built for an older campaign. And I tried to get them to ninja into the house, but they're too used to being pulled along by the hand and aren't much for plans. Sara's character Bella had been pretty awesome up to this point and landed a solid punch on an NPC they were torturing, so she decided to be awesome and...distract. Because she is a Toreador and she is beautiful. Only they were hiding outside of a house in the middle of the night, and no one was around.
Distract what? I asked.
Sara struck a pose. Then faltered.
Liz mimicked her pose and said, Distract the house.
We're going to turn it into a t-shirt.
We were there ridiculously late, but we had awesome times.
I was faintly useful on Tuesday, getting thank-you cards done and other school-related errands. I also got mom's birthday present made (I will explain it after her birthday has passed so as not to ruin the surprise). I went to Institute, because I had no classes, and afterwards I got taught by the home teachers. I guess, when Korina told me we had new visiting teaching assignments, I should have realized that meant new home teaching assignments for the elders as well. I still have Stephen the med student, but now I also have Jacob the not student. Both are great guys and I like them lots, and it was good times.
I spent the rest of the day, well, being lazy. Catching up on TV shows I'd missed and otherwise having a good, if lazy, time.
Today was no different. I did get some errands done - I mailed mom's birthday present and bought jeans to replace my favorite ones that ripped (though I am still wearing them in a fit of rebellion; I shall no longer wear them at school is all). I talked to mom and ate lunch, and then Angela and I went to see New Moon. MST3K'd it as quietly as we could, because our usual theatre was pretty packed. I still like me some RPattz, and he wasn't in this movie much, and I appreciated that his moments were less about looking pretty and more about looking angsty, but...
Man. I can't believe I spent money on that. Sure, it reaffirmed that I was frickin' right to be on Team Jacob (sort of), and all those shirtless boys were a super awesome bonus, but...some of those lines had sounded pretty bad in my head when I read them, and they were worse on screen. And...urgh. The entire calamity and nonsenical nature of the beast that is Bella and Edward. Charlie still made me laugh, and the moments at the theater with the action movie in the background were funny. I also seriously loved Jacob, although I think he deserves better than what he got - from either Bella or the Renesme monster. But Angela and I had a good time, and jokes abounded.
I was going to do homework when I got home, but I ended up fangirling with some Merlin and then writing a whole bunch of stuff for the Carolyn-verse.
And then...then I went to see All Saints Day. One, it washed off the girl-taint from New Moon. And two...two I just had to see it. It was gritty and violent and all kinds of not a movie I should watch, but it was...man. It made me smile and laugh and...I'd forgotten how goofy and funny and unplanned the McManus brothers were. I dug the scene with Rocco. At first it struck me as odd, but as soon as they spewed the line about why men don't share their feelings...I felt justified. Because I feel the same way. I went to see the movie with D&D Kile. He'd mentioned wanting to see it and to see it together, so I called him today to see if it was on. And it was.
I took steps to prevent it from being a date. He offered to pick me up, but I am more than willing to drive myself. And I bought my own ticket. But we talked and had a good time.
And...wow.
Okay, so the movie changed the canon I was working from, but it was so cool that I really don't care.
And now I'm awake and hungry and have every intention of writing.
Lots.
