Just got home from my first day at work. I rolled myself out of bed at half six, climbed into the shower, dressed, ate, read some Ororon and went to work. They let me clock in (which I'm still nervous about, because when I clocked out it said something about having recorded 0 total hours for me, and no hours means no pay), and then set me and Dayna (the other trainee) to reading some instruction manuals that were generally useless. A girl named Holly was meant to train us, but the girl who did train us, Sarah, was much nicer. Dayna and I watched Sarah work for fifteen minutes or so before she set us off to our own lanes. I ended up working the express lane, which wasn't too bad. Being a cashier is sort of like playing a video game because after each transaction you get a score for how fast you were, and it's something of a fun challenge to see how high you can get your score. It was a while before I scored about sixty, and come the end of the day I hadn't made it past seventy-five, where the goal is eighty-five, but oh well. I did okay at the grinny friendly thing, not quite as good at the pestering about credit cards thing (although I did manage to get the first credit card application of the day) and in the end it was fine. A fifteen-minute break doesn't feel like much, but it was nice. Being a cashier isn't half as hard as being waitress because when it's slow you just sort of stand there, maybe straighten stuff on the shelves, whereas when I was a waitress if you weren't serving you were probably cleaning. The new girls I work with, Dayna, Emily and Sarah are really nice. This is a pretty good job, and I'm lucky I have it because I'm in an airconditioned building all day.

Hope BenTen and Del made it home safe!
