Day Eighty-two: Lonely on a Sunday
Dec. 19th, 2004 10:13 pmWent to church with mom and dad. Dad sang with the ward choir for the Christmas program. As always, the basses were overtaken by the tenors. No baritones. Still don't know anyone in my ward. Relief Society was fun but it's awkward being the youngest.
I went to deliver presents for mom around the neighborhood, though. It's my job - all of the neighbors know who I am and like me and so I'm the cute little one who gets to go around giving out gifts. Last night I delivered the one for Fred & Sandy. And today I delivered the one for Marge. I feel so bad for her. Ever since her husband died she's been really busy doing loads of volunteer work like at the hospital and stuff. She's really fit for her age - she walks five miles every day no matter what the weather. But she's really lonely, and I felt sort of bad because I didn't stay to talk to her. When I was younger she sort of scared me, but she's really always been quite nice. And she makes these wonderful Italian wafer-biscuit things at Christmas full of aniseed - and since no one else in the family likes them I get to eat them all. She's been sort of like the grandmother I never had - she made me a really pretty Afghan when I graduated, and she helps me out when I'm learning something new with my knitting and crocheting, and she's promised to teach me how to make the lovely cookies sometime this week. I plan on talking to her more this break. She really needs a friend, you know?
And it's not just Christmas that has me noticing this. I've sort of noticed it for a while. Even though I've thought she's barking mad for getting up at half four in the morning.
But no one should be that lonely. I think that's why it was so much fun singing carols for the retired people with the girls on the hall.
Think about it.
Even though it was Ricky Martin and Christina Aguilera, they said it: "Nobody wants to be lonely."
