This last week was both good and bad.

Good:

The new girl started! She's super nice and I like her a lot. She's smart and funny and I think she will really fit in with our office.

I got to hang out with my girl [personal profile] sherlockian_syn and a bunch of my other college friends. We had junk food and played fun party games (Two Rooms and a Boom and Dead Last), and we talked and generally had good times.

I am officially over my cold! I can breathe through my nose again!

I made progress in crafting. Learned a lot of new, tougher skills in bobbin lace, and also I am making progress on my very first sweater (baby-sized, to preserve yarn supplies).

I participated in Wills for Heroes (which is more accurately Baby Sharks helping men realize how poorly they know their wives' legal names and the names and birth dates of all their kids).

Also, I kicked ass in court. For reals. Got a fist bump from the prosecutor and high fives from the clerk and the bailiff, and also the judge seemed pleased with how I did as well.

Lunch with my parents. They came through town and we got to have lunch together and talk. My mom brought me lots and lots of pens and also an awesome new kitchen slicer gadget.

I work with awesome people. The nerdiest people. Someone needs a Harry Potter tie? If I don't have one, I know a lawyer who does.

The newest creepy package arrived! It came in a cool wooden box that I kinda wanna keep, and now I have a super disturbing statue. I want to put it up in my office at work. Cody said maybe I should just put it in a drawer when kids come by. It's been so much fun getting those.

Bad:

I had oral argument with the politician who I despise. He had the temerity to ask me to my face if I'm a licensed attorney. Also he had either the audacity or the stupidity to misquote constitutional law in his oral argument. His little minion was sitting right beside me. Surely he noticed that I had the case in question printed out and in my oral argument binder.

The night before oral argument I was super jittery and afraid. The night after I couldn't sleep at all. I got super hopped up on caffeine, had to force myself to take a deep breath before I started. It was like high school debate all over again. I did pretty pre-flows of my arguments in contrasting colors, I flowed by hand, I pulled things across. It was beautiful. Only I am pretty sure the other dude was so ignorant he didn't even realize how badly he'd been burned.

The weather. Has been screwy. Thanks to my shiny ear piercing I haven't had a full on migraine, but I have had headaches pretty much all the time.

TRIALS. And I don't mean just the "trials of life". I mean three of my cases get set for trial. In one day. One on the same day, as in we had the hearing at noon and had to be back at three to do the trial. Thankfully the prosecution had hard evidence that the dad tried to fake his drug test, so he had to roll over and play dead, but still.

I also had to do an emergency home visit to tell a couple of kids we're going to trial and they have to testify. The one kid is terrified of his dad. It's so sad.

Also have a murder adjacent to one of my cases. It was all over the news. My staff sent me messages. Did you see that on the news, that dead child? We recognized the last name! Was it your case? Not mine, but adjacent. So sad.

Commissioner Scary is now just Attorney Scary. He showed up to court for some regular hearings on Thursday. He smiled at me and was super nice to me. I am still terrified of him. The bailiffs made fun of me.

I learned the depths of just how creepy a stalker one of the prosecutors had been toward one of my coworkers who he'd been dating (a year ago; she got married last month but apparently he was crazy right up until she got married) and now he's going up to be a judge and what do I do? Since he wants me to write a reference for him. I talked to my coworker and she said we'd best keep it professional, that behavior from him was aberrant, but...was it really? I don't know. Still torn about that.

Goal check-in:

Writing! I wrote a birthday fic, and I have plans for more gift fics. I just adore writing gift fics. I do need to get on that murder mystery for my mother though, for reals. Original fic, come on!

Spirituality! A bit better. This week is Easter week, plus conference is coming up, and I'm excited for that.

Fitness! I did yoga every week day last week! I think that's going well. Now that I can breathe again I will add the cardio back in. I'm pretty excited.

Work! I have been so lame at studying it isn't even funny. Gonna try harder this week. Wish me luck!

Here's to hoping this week goes better. Very little court. I can get lots of studying done. And words! Here goes!
