True fact: last week really wasn't bad for me. Monday was basically court all day, longer because I agreed to cover court for a colleague who was covering court for another colleague who was having an emergency, but generally okay. Except, you know, for the part where my soda spilled. I was so sad, because I needed caffeine, and also the bailiffs made fun of me relentlessly for the rest of the week.

Tuesday was a pretty good day. Had a few meetings, no court. Got to have a grand lunch with a bunch of my coworkers. We hit up the Sodalicious shack and bought bento boxes from the Japanese place down the street, and then we sat around and talked. Traded war stories, you know, like we do. Cases gone insane (baby with skull fractures) and life in general. Practice. Attorneys who are super crazy and we're not sure how they became lawyers, but lawyers just aren't as smart as most people think. And then I went and voted. I timed it right, because there was no line. Got in and out right quick, was pretty excited to vote to retain some of the judges I really like and respect. Did not vote to retain all of the judges, because I didn't feel like everyone up for retention should have been retained, but most people don't pay attention to judicial retention, so some judges who the judiciary committee didn't recommend be retained were voted for retention anyway. Don't come whining to me when that judge does something crazy on your divorce, buddy.

Wednesday was, well. Work-wise pretty chill - court, mediation, and a home visit. Highlight of my day was trying to explain Donald Trump's hair to a fourth grader and a fifth grader. Pretty much everyone I knew online and from college was...devastated by the election results. Most of the people I knew in person were...just carrying on with work like always. Some were very disappointed in the election results. Some were happy about them. Most of them were worried about putting out the fires in front of us. I did get a lucky break when one of the parents failed to show up for mediation, so I could go eat some lunch. That was really nice. And then I went dancing with the girls that night, and we played dance games (which is less silly than it sounds), and that helped.

Thursday was basically court all day again, and drug court on top of that, but I did get to go out for Tamale Thursday with a good chunk of the drug court team, and that was fun. I've missed my old team a lot, and that made me happy. I also got to ride in my one colleague's super fancy convertible, so that was fun. Some poor kid was observing drug court staffing, and I think we scared him away around the time I suggested that people who relapsed on heroin ought to watch an autopsy so they could appreciate the consequences of their choices (this riffing off of the concept of the relapse autopsy, when people who relapse have to dissect what led up to the relapse and how to prevent future relapse). We're bad people, seriously. But most of my cases are going well, so we are glad. I also got to babysit one of my own clients, which was good and shiny until she started to spit up. Good thing I wasn't holding her, because nothing says professional courtroom demeanor like baby puke.

And then Friday was a holiday for me, because I work for The Man (would we start saying The Woman if Hillary won?). I basically spent the entire day huddled on the couch finishing Three Rivers, and also doing origami for stories, and then that evening Cody and I went out for dinner with Pat and Kip, which resulted in us getting junk food, talking about life, and having a surprisingly serious conversation about gender stereotypes in sexual assault. True fact: the white dudes I know are actually really sensitive to issues of safety for women. I am proud to be friends with them.

Saturday Cody and I were lazy, and then we threw down some tile...and then Angela came over and we watched The Fights. Oh man, this was the perfect Fight Night to watch. Every fight on the Main Card was awesome. We had so much fun. Angela was pretty chill. Cody sucked at calling who was going to win, though I think half the time he rooted against me just because. We were both rooting for Thompson against Woodley, though. We had pizza and soda and yelled at the TV a lot, and it was fun.

Yesterday was a good day. Church was good. I finished crocheting another pair of gloves. That's two fancy pairs now, plus the pair I need to send to my friend, and the pair I made for myself. The more I do the pattern the faster I get at it. So, one glove can be done in under three hours. Cody and I hung out with some neighbor friends, and also had a nap together. Our sleep schedule got messed up during our week off, and we're fighting to get it back together.

Today was a chill day, too. I got to sleep in and then court was light and meetings were light, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the meeting I thought was going to be horrible was actually okay. And the hearing I thought was going to go to hell went okay as well. True fact: skipping court deliberately can get you arrested, and when you're eighteen or over, that means grown-up jail. Some of my cases aren't going very well, and I'm getting ready to get harsh with some parents, but hey, dude, if you get yourself thrown in jail this late in the game, that's not really my problem. I just have to do what the law states, and that means you lose. And you lose big.

We were going to lay down tile tonight, but I was coming down with a migraine - they've been dogging me since last week; I blame the weather - so now we're both just chilling till bedtime in hopes of resetting our sleep schedules. Going to an early Thanksgiving with my family this week, so...good times!

My case load is super low, less than a hundred and ten kids, so I'm trying to keep my head down so they don't go dumping another fifty kids on me. The only way they could dump a bunch of kids on me all at once like that is if they assigned me to one of the far courts, and getting split between three courts is just slow suicide. I heard a former conflict guardian who became an AG will be replacing our AG who's getting deployed for his National Guard or Army Reserve two-year deployment thingie. I'm going to miss him. He was funny, and he was brilliant at trial.

I signed up for two SGA RB fics, so we will see how that goes, especially since one of them is in a genre I've literally never written before. One day I need to learn how to say no.
