Day 1232: Sleeping in Strange Places
Jan. 31st, 2016 05:53 pmThis past week really wasn't a bad one, but there were lots of late night as we scrambled to finish projects (the basement bedroom, knives for our cub scouts, the leak in the kitchen sink) so I spent a lot of time wandering around like a zombie, guzzling caffeine to try to stay awake, and mostly failing.
This week I fell asleep sitting on a archery target in the garage while we worked on knives, walking through Home Depot trailing a dishwasher hose and looking for plumbing fittings, and standing in the kitchen while I was supposed to be handing Cody tools. What can I say? Sleeping anywhere is an Asian gift.
The other night I fell asleep on the couch, fully dressed, glasses and all. I was sleeping comfortably till I woke in the middle of the night with a vicious cramp in my right calf. After the pain subsides and I could stand, I undressed and crawled into bed. Apparently sleeping all night in my bra scrambled my brain, because when I got dressed for work (and temple volunteering) the next day, I forgot to put on a bra. Granted, it was freezing cold and I was wearing lots of layer and no one noticed (I didn't notice till about halfway through my volunteer shift), but I was pretty fuzzy and discombobulated through most of the day.
The definite highlight of this week was going dancing again. I am signed up for both classes. In beginner we are doing a basket dance, which I have never done before (but I figure if I can dance with a sword balanced on my head, I can dance with a basket balanced on my head and it will be significantly less dangerous). Advanced class is zills again, which I am super excited for. I always do love zills. (I suspect the dancing, for which a significant part of the choreography we drilled was on releve, was the cause of the leg cramp in the wee hours of Thursday night/Friday morning.)
To celebrate dancing, Angela and I went to buy some more costume pieces, and also shop for baskets. Then we got back to my place and we fed the missionaries (and the boys; Kip was around getting his stuff moved in and the missionaries thought he and Cody were the same person and that Cody had changed shirts when they weren't looking). After feeding hungry, awkward teenage boys, Angela and I set about working on her zills. I bought her new pretty Saroyan zills for Christmas, so we had to measure and cut her elastic for them. Also, I bought several pairs of baby socks so she can put them on her zills to mute them while she practices (Ivy and Dingo go nuts when I practice my zills), so I need to finish cutting and stitching the baby socks. I hear a lot of ladies crochet zill covers, but I am too lazy for that (despite not being too lazy to knit a scarf; go figure).
All in all it's been a long and crazy week, and if I never have to set foot inside of a Home Depot again it will be too soon, but overall it was a good week, and for that I am glad.
My kids continue to make me crazy, their parents crazier, and their grandparents the craziest, but that's okay. I ran into one of my old friends from law school - he was appearing in the district court in the same building as the juvenile court where I am posted - and I went to say hi to him in the parking lot. And one of the crazy grandmas from the case I'd just closed got out of her car and started yelling at me. (It wasn't the best Monday in the world - I slipped on the ice in the parking lot, a crazy grandma yelled at me, and a prosecutor made fun of me for playing D&D even though I got him back when I mentioned Vin Diesel plays D&D.)
The good news is that I am writing lots more fiction. Bad news is that none of it is original and I am falling behind on, er, everything else? Except learning lame pop songs on the piano apparently.
My mum and dad shipped off for parts foreign - just in time to avoid the snow storm that's sweeping the country and sending our male politicos into hiding so all the ladies are the only ones who show up to work - and I miss talking to mum.
It's going to be a bit weird having a housemate after not having one for so long (Cody doesn't count, because he doesn't get weirded out if I need to do a naked sprint through the house to find clean laundry), but I think it will be all right in the end.
Here's to a better week.
