This week felt like doing time in the penalty box for, well, trying to fight a widespread social ill that seems to be growing faster than any of us can hope to keep up with. Five full days in court. Ten children removed from their parents just before Christmas. One guy who punched a one-year-old because the kid wouldn't stop crying (for the last time! Kids cry! Dogs bark!). First appearance in front of a new judge.

Time in front of the new judge wasn't super bad. I had a familiar court team - Gary the PD (as opposed to Gary the AG) and Alan the AG. We talked about poetry, Bible translations, and all kinds of other sad, nerdy things. (Apparently Alan wrote a volume of poetry as his thesis? People keep telling me to check it out. Except for the one lawyer who uncomfortably suggested that some of Alan's poetry had "adult" themes? Whatever.)

Dance this week was awesome. We worked with veils (which was so much fun!). Naturally the one trick I've always wanted to learn - the butterfly - is viciously difficult. The most fun part? Having a sail. (Sounds crazy. Try it some time. Oddly soothing, after such a long day.) Veil fans are viciously difficult, especially since I am lousy at spotting for spins and also since I am lousy at using a veil fan left-handed. But it was so much fun! There is something oddly soothing about working with veils, even though it makes my arms so tired! Also I found a veil of mine that I hadn't even realized was missing. One of the instructors found it, and I am so glad I got it back!

On Friday night Angela came over. We watched SGA and ate pizza and had really fun times. Nerdy times are always good. Lots of origami and needing out.

This weekend we saw my niece at her Christmas dance recital. She's been sick recently, so we weren't sure she was going to perform, but she danced, and she was pretty good! I was really impressed at her four-year-old ability to follow along with her teacher. (The teacher tends to stand on the edge of the stage and demonstrate for the kids so they can follow along, because it might - just might - be beyond a four-year-old's ability to memorize choreography.) Afterwards we went out for lunch, and I colored with my niece and helped her with her pancakes (she had to try all the syrup types) and I got to hold my baby nephew. After the food Cody and I came back to our place and I did laundry and then we watched UFC 194! Rockhold versus Weidman was unreal, and McGregor versus Aldo was...so short. Cody was pretty smug. I guess he holds the same combat philosophy as McGregor, that precision and timing matter more in a fight than strength or speed. Thirteen seconds and the fight was done. Whoa. But it was fun, hanging out with Cody.

My poor mom has been pretty lonely and having medical issues and setbacks this year, and I feel pretty bad for her, but she's been pretty cool about talking to me on the phone every night, especially when things are stressful at work.

Here's to another week. One more full week before Christmas. I got this.

...I kinda miss school. All that time off between semesters. Where did that go?
