Day 1074: On the Road
May. 19th, 2013 08:27 pmThis week it felt like I lived in the car. Honestly, I spent most of the week hanging out with Cody and having fun, but this weekend was a whole lot of road-tripping.
Monday night we went to see our friend Carl in Rogers & Hammerstein's Once Upon a Mattress. He played the wizard, and he gave me a little origami bird. Kid is graduating from high school this year. I think the first time I talked to him was three years ago around this time, while he and Cody were on the road home from Kenpo Camp in Wyoming. Cody was driving, and he called me, and apropos of nothing, he handed the cell phone over to Carl so we could say hi. Carl has proven to be a very sweet kid. On Friday we drove down to Wyoming (after several wrong turns down I-15, because when we have deep philosophical discussions, we don't pay attention to road signs). Carl was testing for his first degree black belt, and we wanted to be there to support him. His dad was super grateful we showed up and offered to take us on a plane ride sometime. His dad is kind of amazing. If you looked at him, you'd think he was some kind of red-neck farmer. You'd never know he is also an accomplished blacksmith, engineer, and pilot. And an all-around nice guy.
This week at work we managed to get some important projects done, and I'm making progress on my projects, so I'm excited. My girl Cory was in the office for at least one day. Everything is better when she's around, be it online or in person, because she always makes me smile and laugh. When we're both working from home, I'm going to miss her fiercely.
On Friday I sat by myself crocheting while the boys did the seminars that came after the test. What do I have to show for nearly six hours by myself? Yeah. Nothing. Except the urge to cry when I realized the math in the pattern was horribly wrong and I need to redo the two giant pieces I already crocheted. Seriously. I am super frustrated. But we went out to dinner with Sensei Herbie, Carl, Randall, and Casey (who are two seriously badass martial artists) and also an instructor from New York named Joe. We ate at an old Mexican restaurant where Herbie worked when he was a teenager. It was good food.
We got a call from our estate agent on Friday, so instead of hanging out around for the Saturday seminars we went home shopping...and we put a bid in on another house! It's going to require some really superficial clean-up work (like a new paint job), but we like it a lot, and if we close soon, then we can move down early and get some work done. Cody's friend Steven is back from dental school, and once he gets done with his summer board exams he said he'd help us out. We went to lunch with Steven after we got done house hunting, and we had awesome sushi and good conversation. Steven's a really awesome guy, and he will always hold a fond place in my heart since he helped set Cody and I up on our first date.
We headed on home after that, and we stopped off at the shop so Cody would work on some of his knives, and I wrote. And I finished by big bang story, which was awesome. It's not quite novel length, because it comes in at around 45,000, but it's done, and now I'm in the market for a beta.
Today was all right. Stayed home instead of hitting the road because we'd been traveling so much. Ran around and delivered cookies to our students who didn't show up to Sunday school, and I got to hold my friend's baby. He's only two weeks old. I've never held a human that young before. It's so strange to think that just about everyone I've ever met started off that tiny and soft and vulnerable.
In the world of fandom...this week was the finale of Season 8 of Supernatural, and the fangirls were full of feels and weeping. After what was a largely inconsistent season, the last run of episodes really made their mark, and I am pretty excited for the ninth season. Till then, I have the anime to keep me entertained.
We find out tomorrow whether we got the house or not. I'm pretty nervous and hope it ends well. We really need somewhere to live.
