Day 1032: Tough Crowds
Jun. 3rd, 2012 07:39 pmSo...This week has been an adventure. Not necessarily a bad one, but an adventure all the same. Monday was Memorial Day. Spent some of it with Cody's family, meandering through a local cemetery. When someone's family has been in the same county for five generations, there are lots of people to visit. My family is all about respecting Veterans, but they have never been much for visiting graves, mostly because we have never lived near graves on Memorial day, and when I was a kid it was never a holiday anyway. In fact, I've never seen either of my grandfathers' graves, the only grandparents of mine I ever knew. I only have fond memories of the one. Still, it was interesting to hear Grandma's tales about her relatives.
After the grave decorating, we went out into the middle of nowhere to shoot. Burned through a box of 500 .22, as well as loads of rifle ammo. We convinced Cody's mom to come with us, as she hadn't handled a gun since her farm girl days. As it turns out, she is better than her husband with a pistol. Hilarious. We forgot to bring the clay flinger even though we remembered the shotgun, so we just plinked with soda cans. It was a moot point anyway, because we found out I can't use the clay flinger anyway. Cody could fling a clay himself, then scoop up his shotgun and shoot it, or I could throw the clays like frisbees. Turns out one of the clay launchers is only thirty bucks, so if we save we can get one.
Friday night, we went to a choir concert at the university. They have a great music program and sang some of my favorite songs. Best song was by the men's choir, called "We may not be vampires, but we're still men", in reaction to Twilight. Awesome. I laughed myself silly. Had so much fun. After I ran into a kid I knew back in Omaha, which was odd but fun. More than one of the kids in my old singles ward is up there, so it was only a matter of time before I ran into one of them.
Today was full of frightening. Teaching the teenagers? All too reminiscent of being a debate captain and teacher's aide in high school. Trying to teach, having little discipline or control, and forgetting that the students don't think like I do. Then again, it was fast Sunday, and all the boys were probably super hungry, and that was probably messing with their concentration skills. I am teaching again next week, and so I fully plan on bribing them with candy. It's a tried and true tactic.
Tonight we are hanging out with one of Cody's friends whose father passed away this week, poor kid. And I found out my aunt was in a terrible head-on collision. My uncle saw the car coming, reacted, and unfortunately turned the car so my aunt's side took the full impact. He's fine, but both her legs are broken and she's not doing well. My cousin is blaming my uncle (who is not her father), but I can't - it was a split-second decision, and he and my aunt haven't been married long, so his reaction was likely self-preservation. Still, my aunt is in bad shape.
Here's to further happiness this week. I am super excited because I get to see my old friends while I'm down in SLC for CLE.
