Day 990: Trial by Headdesk
Jun. 25th, 2011 07:00 pmOnce again, it's been two weeks since I updated. Life has been..it's been.
I cannot remember all the things I've done, so here are the highlights.
Church:
There were some awkward RS teaching snafus wherein one of my teachers bailed on me so Val had to teach twice. I really need to try harder at my calling. I had to play piano for the opening hymn once, which was an adventure. I didn't completely botch, and I probably played too quietly, and I never did master the whole pedal thing, but the fact remains that I could play.
I have been skipping FHE a little rampantly and feel kind of bad for it, but these days I have been kind of antisocial. At the end of a work day I am typically exhausted, and that's that. I got to go to the temple, though, and after a long day at work it was awesome.
Nerdiness:
D&D has been pretty steady. We got a new girl, Lisa, who is pretty cool, and I've been going to the Village Inn with the gang regularly. In fact, I'm sitting on a blanket in the shade on a summer day with some of the Lair gang waiting for some Shakespeare on the Green. We managed to play a game of Grimm a couple of weekends back, but our gaming schedule has been erratic. I learned from Tomie that if my kids stray from the storyline, I can let them twist in the wind until they get back on the right path. I shall cease leading them around by the nose.
Training hasn't been happening. I finally went in to get my ankle checked by the doctor, and th x-rays were clear, it was just a bad sprain, but I've been giving it some time to let it heal. Also, I have been hanging out with friends instead.
Friends: I've been hanging out with Val, watching weird movies and crocheting. We had dinner at an awesome Italian restaurant down in Old Market for her birthday, me and Val and non-lawyer Amber M. It's been good. I've seen some awesome movies, and some creepy movies, and some weird movies, and now I am desperate to see the movie version of The Tempest with Ben Whishaw as Ariel. I haven't talked to Angela nearly enough, which makes me sad. My friend Jenny who is studying for the bar sent a message last night - she is super stressed and her grandmother only has a month left to live.
Work: has been crazy and stressful, but I got to go to my first full trial, from void dire to verdict. It was just supposed to be me and Dad, but Big Brother ended up coming along. I missed the hearing I was meant to go to with Big Brother and ended up driving out of town with Dad. He let me drive his car, and we met with the client at a Village Inn. We ate and talked till the sirens went off and we had to go back to the hotel (or take shelter in the restaurant walk-in freezer).
Voir dire was interesting. Crowded. Dad's ex wife was there, which was awkward, and OPC wasn't nearly as horrible as Big Brother thought he was. I got to be the paralegal, the note taker, and I pushed paper and made sure witnesses were okay. That first night we skipped a couple of witnesses and shuffled things around, and then stayed up super late planning. I saw Dad have a margarita and saw Big Brother in shorts, a t-shirt, and flip flops. After Dad's insistent speech about always looking like a lawyer, I was surprised. I wore the t-shirt I nicked from Cody to get comfortable.
The next day was long and boring in a couple of places. We did the best we could and fought hard, and then Dad bolted, so it was just me and Big Brother at an Italian restaurant. Super awkward moment: when he leaned in to the hostess and said in a low, conspiratorial voice, "Can we get a nice, quiet table? In the back?". The hostess looked at him, then looked at baby-faced me, and nodded tightly. And showed us to a secluded table. I tried to teach Big Brother about SSRIs and SNRIs and it didn't go well, but there you go.
The third day, it was just me and big brother. We did our best, he closed, and then he almost left all our stuff at the hotel.
In the end, we lost. But we fought hard, so that's what counts.
