Day 963: Fuzzy around the edges
Jan. 26th, 2011 10:31 pmI am...fuzzy around the edges. Probably because I spent seven hours in the car and drive almost 500 miles (round trip).
Details from life last week...Friday night I went to training, and Elder Sensei Raymond was there for the first time in a long time. His shoulder is still twinge-y, but he was there and he helped out, so that was good. Angela and I had food and watched TV while I did some legal secretary tests on her computer.
Saturday I spent all day judging the undergrad mock trial tournament. Got to be a presiding judge in one of them, which was fun, and also managed to do a teeny tiny bit of networking (which I hate, so I'm glad it sorta fell into my lap. Now I just need to follow up on it). Had food and hung out with Angela afterwards, and we finished season one of Stargate. The weather was terrible on Saturday, so bad that they cancelled church on Sunday so it was just sacrament meeting.
Of course, the roads were fine on Sunday, so after sacrament meeting in a strange building I stuck around and had some quality time with the piano, sight-reading the treble clef of a whole bunch of hymns. It was good practice, but man, I'm not half the pianist I used to be. Wrote letters and cooked and talked to Cody.
Monday was...good, for the most part. Got useful things done, did my best to be special and grown-up, and halfway through the day, someone flipped a switch in me, and I went from okay and productive to homicidal and vicious. Didn't go to FHE lest I accidentally stab someone. Stayed up too late talking to Ericka and formatting a story I finished late last year. After doing shiny things with Cody's birthday story and Amber's Christmas story, I'm kind of obsessed with having pretty stories in pdf form that work just like e-books on my iPad.
That being said, I jacked up my sleep schedule royally, so even though I was awake periodically Tuesday morning, I didn't actually roll out of bed and attempt to be useful until 2 pm. Then I was useful - drafted legal documents for mom and everything. Went to training, which was fun - blind-fighting, sparring gauntlet, some rank requirements. I was the only girl, and there were only four of us, including Curtis, which is rare, but it was a good class.
I talked to Cody, and it was brief. On Monday talking to him helped calm me down. Last night, both of us seemed distracted, which meant I was broody on most of the drive out to Holdredge. I got drowsy two thirds of the way into the drive and so I paused to take a nap, which made mom spaz because she thought the drive was longer than it actually was and she thought I'd be late for my interview, but it was all right.
I got into town, filled my car, and changed into a suit. Then I wandered around the main street, looking at the shops and seeing how businesses were doing. For a small town it was pretty lively and happening, and I didn't see any vacancies on the high street. I stopped by a real estate office and got a list of rentals and talked to the real estate agent about the town. Sounds like a typical small rural town - shooting, fishing, and pig wrestling being the highlights - but Kearney's close by, which is bigger and will hopefully have some sort of martial arts to keep me going.
The interview...well, I recognized the guy who interviewed right before me. Same graduating class and everything. We had some classes together, and I remember he was very quiet, but I couldn't think of his name to save my life - I don't think we were in the same section as 1Ls. I didn't realize that I'd be the only deputy if I got the job - just me and the boss. He was really nice, and I did my best to answer his questions, and I think I did all right. I wasn't perfect - I was nervous, but he was very friendly and I think I'd be okay working with him. Afterward I went and got Chinese before I hit the road. Got an email from Cody that made me smile.
I like driving at night better than during the day. Talked to mum for a bit of the drive and hoped Angela would call, but I ended up singing all the way home, which was fine by me.
And now...now I'm exhausted and my perception is fuzzy round the edges, so I'm going to bed.
Hope I made it. Don't know if I did.
