Day 931: Never Ceases to Amaze Me
Aug. 17th, 2010 09:16 amI know things, in the back of my mind, like fire is hot and rain will give me a headache or possibly a migraine, and my friends are awesome people, but...sometimes I have to experience it to appreciate it fully. And experience it I did.
First of all, I got useful things done yesterday - wrote letters, paid bills, did laundry and dishes, worked on jewelry for mom. (I learned that I am not made to be a beader, as my projects tend to explode right when I think they are done, but I know what I am doing, and that's what counts, right? Right.) Cody once explained to me that he learned early in our relationship that for me, a productive day is a good day, where for him a good day is a day when he feels good, regardless of how many useful things he got done. I suppose for me, my good day is the same as his if only because I feel good when I get useful things done. I also got cool things in the mail from my mom...and also a book. A Ficly book. Why would I get a ficly book? Because one of my stories is in it. That's why. I am contemplating keeping it to myself and reading it (although I suspect I've read most of the stories in there already, but almost none of the poems) or sending it to my mom as a memento of the fact that I write fiction incessantly. It also reminded me that I really, really need to finish writing things. Oh, fiction, I love you so much, and here I am, unemployed, yet with barely enough time to write. Go figure. I will make fiction happen, I will - I just need to get grown-up things happen first.
So...what did I learn yesterday? That I have awesome friends.
Angela finished her evil research paper of doom, so I took her out to dinner. I am a cheap date, so we went to the Burger King where we usually go for soft-serve ice cream, and we had dinner, and we talked (law, life, ninjas), and we had ice cream. Thanks to Angela, I learned that ninja camp is indeed going down...the weekend before I take off to Europe. Poor Angela cannot go as she is injured, but you know what? I am totally going. I told Cody about it, and he insisted on a fully report. I am crazy excited. Chani got to go to kung fu camp and I was jealous, and I was sure that while I was studying for the bar I'd miss ninja camp, but this year it's happening, and I'm jazzed. I am also afraid of getting pranked in the middle of the night, but I'm hoping being a girl will get the older guys to lay off and that being a "grown-up" will get the kids to law off. Who knows, though.
I went to FHE and really did have every intention of actually helping with the activity, but on Sunday Korina asked if I'd be willing to teach some self-defense, and I would, but honestly I'm not that qualified, so I did what Angela suggested and saw about getting us a black belt teacher instead.
You can guess where this is going. It's been my experience, via facebook, that on a Monday after work Sensei Raymond is bored, and I thought, well, if he was bored last Monday, and he is bored this Monday, it stands to reason that he will be bored next Monday. All the other black belts have hobbies/girlfriends/wives and children, so likely none of them will be able to help. So...I bit the bullet and sent Sensei Raymond a message asking if he'd be willing to hang out with the church kids for about half an hour. We bartered back and forth (I offered him food and the chance to meet pretty church girls), and he agreed to do it. I'll have to talk to him tonight at class and see what gives, but...I swung it. I'm pretty sure by the time this is done and with my negotiating skills I'm going to owe around a hundred push-ups and possibly my first-born child, or maybe just half of my pantry, but I want to help Korina, and maybe this will be a good opportunity for Sensei Raymond to meet nice church girls (who aren't me).
After FHE we played John's D&D game (end of a story arc so I can take over next week, which means I need to get down with the storyline business, huh?), which was good times. He used a clear dry-erase grid as the map, which was a pretty ingenious system, and we had a lot of fun. I got to RP my old samurai from my college days, and we found ourselves a new girl who looks like she'd be willing to play with us. Sara F. apparently missed me loads and hugged me (glomped me, more like), and I told her about Cody (she's crazy jealous; when I informed Cody, he told me that people only think he's cute when he has a girlfriend, which is backwards as a pick-up strategy). Poor Kristy is freaking out because her mom keeps harassing her that she'll never get a boyfriend. (My mother thought the same of me for a long time, because really, what guy is going to date a girl who likes anime, video games, RPGs, and martial arts? Perhaps a guy who likes anime, video games, RPGs, and martial arts.) I told Kristy to breathe, not panic, and give it time.
I'm not going to lie, though, I got incredibly lucky.
Incredibly.
Just sayin'.
Of course, I talked to Cody after I got home, and then I went to bed.
While I was at FHE, I saw my friend Will (not law Will, but Benedick-to-my-Beatrice-without-the-romance Will), and since he and I are both footloose and fancy free this week we plan on going to a movie (The Expendables, perhaps?), sparring, and playing video games. I'm excited, not gonna lie. It means I will actually have a social life. Also it will be more motivation to get useful things done.
...Right now I am updating my journal because it's raining and I hate driving/being in the rain. But I will run errands before I buckle down to write, I promise.
