Day 883: Improvements and Advancements
Mar. 9th, 2010 10:49 pmMonday was an all right day. I got to sleep in, which was nice. Because Jenny was sick, I didn't go to voir dire, and I figure I will bite the bullet and just email the county attorney and see about meeting with him sometime to discuss my future prospects.
I got some work done at the clinic, and then Jenifer and I (she is not to be mixed up with Jenny) took a trip down to OHA. The trip was...well. Boring. We watched some mind-numbing footage from security cameras at public housing, which was sad and painful, and we copied some paperwork (which turned up interesting discoveries for our client), and then we had to boost out of there because we needed to file a proposed scheduling order down at the courthouse to avoid getting our case dismissed. The lady at the courthouse was super nice and took pity on us because we were students, and that made us happy.
Back at the clinic, we got some work done, and then I went home. Chilled. Went to FHE, which was good times. I had soda for the first time in a long time, and also rootbeer floats. As it was noisy downstairs where we usually game, the nerds and I sat in a circle on the floor upstairs and spread out with a whole load of junk food, which was awesome. There was some awkwardness with Kile, who pretty much asked me out over facebook. He's a nice kid, and he's my home teacher, but he's a little socially inept, and pretty much the person he talks to outside the context of a game is me. Still, the game went really, really well. My players improved, especially new Sarah, who threw herself into a situation and just ran with it. They're learning to focus. I, as a GM, also immensely improved. There are now eight players total in this game, which is bigger than I've ever run before, and last night they decided to split up. And somehow - I think from watching DM Tomie - I learned how to wrangle a gang of eight. They did great, we had fun, and overall I was pleased with them.
Today was a long, long day. Not my best day. Got to the clinic at 8 and attempted to do homework. Read for Native American law and First Amendment, though I really don't remember what I read. Best moment ever, though - Cath, the office manager, ducked out to do errands, and when she came back, it was with my shiny new laptop. From which I am posting at this very moment. It was like Christmas. I had to hijack a cord from one of the work computers that no one was using to transfer data from the old computer to the new computer, so I had three working computers on my desk all day and I looked like a miniature Penelope Garcia, but it was so, so worth it. I love this new laptop! I called my mom to celebrate while I opened it, and it was so much fun. I got lunch, and then also scored some free food to use as lunch tomorrow. There were a couple of client meetings, one that didn't go so well because the client forgot her ID and you cannot get things notarized unless you have an ID to show to the notary. The other meeting went just fine, and was brief, which made me happy.
I think, all day, I only took two actual intake calls. Jenifer, my partner, was not having a good day in the aftermath of her sister's death, so she took the day off, and I was all right with that - what's she's going through is very difficult. I was less than pleased to learn that while Jenifer and I were down at OHA getting info on a client, OHA was, at the same time, drafting a complaint to get said client evicted. While we were there. They didn't even tell us. My client called and then brought in paperwork, and...grrrr. I am not happy. Jenifer says she'll talk to the attorney, but who knows what will happen. So we might have two trials this month, although I got a notice from opposing counsel (the one who I don't like after our one conversation on the phone) that he's moving to dismiss the case before it goes to trial.
Apparently he really just didn't read the summary judgment order.
Went to ninjitsu tonight and worked hard, which was awesome. Sensei R. took me aside to tell me that I'd passed belt testing again, which was weird. Apparently he'd forgotten because I didn't have my new belt (which may be difficult to get in the coming weeks), but now I am officially an orange belt. I got to lead the kids in stretching out, which was both cool and weird, because they kept calling me "ma'am". When I told a little twelve-year-old I had about $80k in student loans, he asked for what, and I said "law school", and he said, "is that in middle school?" and I had to tell him how old I was.
We did some ground training - and I do feel like I'm moving a little smoother on the ground - and we did corner training. We also did pain training, and I feel really, really bad because I made teeny tiny eleven-year-old Sarah cry. I did learn how to injure someone with a penny. I hear quarters and casino chips are even better, but now I can officially hurt someone with cold hard cash. It was a strange moment. Also, apparently my pain tolerance is better than I thought it was.
Best part of the new laptop? I can see my friends on Skype, and they can see me. It's almost like we're in the same room.
I witness for Melilli tomorrow, so it's going to be an interesting day. I also have to get taxes and a lesson plan done.
Man, today was slow, but life overall has been good.
