Day 848: Two days of snow
Dec. 9th, 2009 12:06 amThat's right. Yesterday was snowy. I didn't get nearly as much done as I'd have liked. I woke up late, and lolled about in bed. Then I went to the grocery store to buy cookie supplies. I dropped them off at the Institute (and saw Kari and Will meeting up; oooh) and then went home. At which point I formulated a plan.
So I made myself lunch - pasta; packed a bag while the noodles boiled. And then I hauled myself down to the Institute. Brother Applegarth was kind enough to help me drag a couch out of the classroom and into the main room, and then I set up with my laptop. And goodness gracious I was productive. I outlined my little heart out. Occasionally I'd take breaks and check facebook on my phone, but I deliberately avoided signing into the wireless network on my laptop so I wouldn't get distracted. I did get distracted calling AT&T to get the random not-getting-of-messages on my cellphone fixed, but as it turns out I need an alternate line, which I don't have.
So I gave up and baked cookies instead. I had a system down - two rotating sets of trays, plus an extra tray to store slices of cookie doe. I'd put in a tray to cook, and then go arrange some tables for people to use. Then I'd take the cookies out, put the second set in, arrange more tables while the cookies cooled. I'd spatula them onto a plate, wash the trays, put more cookie dough on them, and continue arranging tables and silverware. Luckily for me, my shiny phone comes with a timer, so I had music while I worked. I read the lesson, and things were good, although I ended up eating a few reject cookies. There was a definite learning curve to not overcooking the cookies, and I had a fun time being all domestic like.
Levi showed up and handled the last of the cookies while I got the lesson done. Mine are short. I prefer them short. And then people got to the cookies. Everyone assured me I hadn't burnt any, and they were nice about it all. Jake decorated a cookie for me on the assurance that it wouldn't have survived to my lesson on Sunday. Levi made cookies out of the scraps, which was sweet of him. I don't know why I'm surprised when he's efficient and helpful. After all, he's an RM, which means he had two years of learning to be effective and a go-getter. Maybe it's because he hangs out with guys at church who look like slouches, but my understanding is that Tom is a nice RM too, so there you go.
After everything was cleaned up, we gamed. I harassed my players for background information while I worked and cleaned - it seems I never participate in the activities I organize - and I attempted to get some serious roleplaying out of them. It worked, for the most part. Kris tried to insulate herself by having a loner character, so I threw a patient at her. Liz was brave for going first. Kile tried to insulate himself by not taking the emotional bait, so now he's just cursed. He's got a good grip of tactics and whatnot, but sometimes his lack of seriousness irks me. I was getting some good RP mojo on, and then he'd ruin it. But he's a sweet kid and means well. We made it to the point in the storyline I wanted, and that's good. I also leveraged Kile's character into an unfortunate spot, but that will come much, much later.
Afterwards, I followed Kile back to his place. He gave me a Christmas gift and his 360 version of Guitar Hero III (including a slightly manky but allegedly serviceable guitar). He showed me his cool geek things, and pictures of himself, and was altogether friendly. I think it's safe to say he has a crush on me. I shall do my best to not encourage it. I did not tell him that I went on a date with Stephen and kind of loved it.
I did tell Chauncy, from D&D, that I went on a date with Stephen. What did Chauncy do? He asked me out on a date. He asked me, first, if I only date Mormon guys. I told him that no, religion is not an absolute bar to dating, especially given my dating track record. He took that the entirely wrong way and offered dinner and a movie. I told him 'after finals', which essentially means next year.
Bloody hell.
I need to learn to say no. It's a bit cheap, but I'm going to ask Tomie for advice. Honestly, though, I should've just said no. Chauncy's coming off a divorce and, flippin'eck, asked me out while he was still married. In BenTen terms, that's bad bueno.
As for today...no drama. Just...school got shut down. And I got a message that school is also shut down tomorrow. It snowed all day today, and the only thing I dared to do was run downstairs and check my mail. All day I could see cars driving so slowly down Dodge. For a supposed "emergency snow route", the ploughing on Dodge is full of lame.
I outlined most of the day. Took more study breaks than necessary and am almost done with my outline. I cooked, I found me all of second season Merlin (some from Kile, some from online hunting) and have been fangirling it up, well, like a sad fangirl. I officially have cabin fever, though. I called my Mom because the only other voice I heard was Anthony calling to tell me tithing settlement was off (I wasn't looking forward to the prospect of hitting up 144th in the snow). I got lots of work done, though. Honestly all I have left is child custody and whatnot and then my M&D outline is done.
So I can, you know, freak out over the juvie paper and the Advanced Con Law paper I still have not read cases for. I suspect Christmas presents for the boys are going to be woefully late this year. Man.
At any rate, I should get back to outlining, because I am dreadfully awake. I will say this - I got all caught up on White Collar and Dollhouse, and for both shows...wow. Just...wow. On White Collar - evil Peter is amazing. And on the Dollhouse - two Tophers was genius (Victor as Topher made me super grin), and also Summer Glau was full of awesome as well.
