Day 764: Homemade is Best
May. 21st, 2009 09:26 pmSo today I was up later than I should have been, but I was on the clock by nine. I picked up some stuff from my boss and then headed out to my office, namely, the corner of the law school that I have adversely possessed. I called the courthouse in hopes of getting a copy of that Bill of Exceptions that I need, but so far there has been no response, so tomorrow I'm going to go down to the courthouse itself and see if there's any paperwork I need to fill out. I read a whole lot of depositions for this one case I'm trying to get up to speed on. Parts of it were boring, like the stuff on the fingerprints. Parts of it were frustrating, i.e. the testimony of one girl who was a vengeful liar. Parts of it were difficult, especially the testimony of the coroner regarding the victim's body. I cringed whenever they used cold, clinical terms, and I didn't dare try to eat, but I realized that they use the technical terms to gain some distance from the horror of the situation. I don't know if I'll be able to do the same.
I read a deposition from one of the wrongfully convicted, and even though it amused the living daylights out of me (one of the main cast in the story had a very unfortunate last name, and there were multiple D&D and WoD/Black Dog references), seeing how little mental stability that woman had, it was clear that she was essentially rail-roaded into testifying. She didn't know anything about the crime until the cops told her about it, and when she parroted back what they told her, they took it as a confession. It was frustrating.
After I got off of work, I dropped my stuff off at home (and found a very lovely letter from the wonderful
aether_entropy) and went to meet Amy and the Sisters. We drove out to North Bend to have dinner with Bernadette and her friend Melanie. Melanie was a cool girl, and Bernadatte was an awesome cook. She's a talented musician and composer and...wow. The people around me are just amazing. I geeked out with Sister Smith on the ride back - anime, Jpop, Asia boys, it was good times.
And now I'm home. Ericka and Chani called me while I was on the road, and now a plot bunny is itching, itching, itching at my fingertips.
I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and lots to write yet. It'll be good times. Oooh, but this summer looks like it's going to rock.
