Day 743: Dancing Queen
That's right. This weekend there was dancing. Lots of dancing. I was full of awesome and danced on Friday night. Got done with trials, went to the stake center, and had dinner. I hung out with Sally, Melissa, and Sabre. We ate together - it was good food, catered by Hyvee - and then I ducked out to avoid the whole speed-dating thing. For a totally legitimate reason, i.e. to go to belly dance practices. Almost killed a few people Friday night with the sword slipping all over the place, but we got the bottom edge grooved, and now it stays in place much better. After practice I went back to the stake center and danced my little heart out. We girls made a game of the slow dances, mostly to the tune of points - one point for a boy from out-of-town (i.e. in Nebraska but not Omaha), and two points for a boy from out of state. Also, Sally totally won the speed-dating game, which was to attempt to make as many boys as possible say the word "balloon." My dance mojo was off, because pretty much every boy I danced with was pre-mission, but there are worse ways to spend a Friday night. A couple of girls from somewhere in Nebraska I've never heard of (Hastings?) crashed on my floor, and then Saturday was all about service.
(Friday night, apart from dancing with boys from my ward, I managed one non-mission boy, who was a world religion major, loved history, and was very sweet. And from out of state. I fail, but I'm okay with that.)
We worked at the Open Door Mission, initially sorting stuffed animals, then sorting clothes. We had fun and were good-spirited (especially after getting awesome pancakes from the institute teachers in the morning) but I was tired and when I got back to my place I crashed on the air mattress I'd put out for the sleepover girls. Then I did homework, ate a bit, and went to the dancing Salon, which was awesome. There was group dancing and we performed our sword dance (and my sword did *not* fall, though it slid a little) and there was awesome food. I talked to Hachan a lot, a very nice Turkish man who teaches...physics? And then I went back to my place and talked to friends online and went to bed.
Sunday was fast Sunday, and I totally bore my testimony. I was meant to go to Chez Checketts for supper, but BTF was on, and I wanted to bring food, so I made some sugar cookies (had to call Mom for baking tips) and then I went to BTF. There was lots of good food, but no CES broadcast like I thought there'd be, so I went home and called my parents and wrote letters. Also discovered the joy of Chicago Hope, which is essentially young!Hotch and young!Gideon for me. (I totally cannot watch Dr. Geiger kiss Dr. Infante, because, hello, Gideon doesn't kiss people! It breaks my mind. But it's A-okay if Hotch kisses people. Because he's, well, Hotch.)
Monday was a good day. I did pretty all right paying attention in class, and I got homework done. Ran errands and did useful things. Went to Amber's to watch House with Angela. And holy hell, but House was awesome, filmed from the POV of a man with locked-in syndrome. It was seriously fantastic. Tonight I will call my mom and fangirl about it. Or something. The humor was spot-on, and so was the poignancy.
Today was extra good. I was out of bed late, but I worked hard this morning. I read for PR, Secured, and B&A, and then I read some Emmanuel for T&E and fifty flashcards for Secured. Went to Institute - Katie came, which is awesome, because I like Katie, and she's awesome - and then PR (zoned out a lot, my bad) and then after school went to the bank. Checked the mail. Received an absolutely lovely gift from a friend. Took me a moment to realize who'd sent it. It's lovely. You know who you are. I coiled some rings for another medieval nerd project (Kent offered some seriously good inspiration) and then the Sister Missionaries came, which was full of awesome, because I love them lots and they always inspire me to be a better person.
I read 48 more flashcards for Secured, and now, well, I'm gonna chill and do stuff before belly dancing tonight. I worked really, really hard today. I was bizarre.
But I think I did all right.
