Day 738: No Pictures Yet
Mar. 21st, 2009 12:19 amToday was law prom.
But we will not start with the prom. We will start with the fact that I got to school at my regular time for the first time all week. I re-read the Secured Transactions assignment, because when I attempted to read it on Thursday it was an abortive effort at best. I mostly wrote fiction in T&E. I paid pretty good attention in Secured with Anderson. Angela and I went to get lunch at the Harper Center together, kinda to get away from the boys and commiserate. Angela and Kate didn't make it through to the negotiation semifinals, and Angela was pretty bummed about it. I did okay concentration-wise in BA, and afterwards Liz and I followed Sieberson up to his office to get some paperwork for his assignment for us on Monday.
Then I went home, went to the post office and picked up packages. Which were all the goodies from China that my super-awesome Mom got for me. I tried on all the new suits - and I do look like quite a spiffy little lawyer in them - and the pretty jewelry (mostly pearls, which I seriously love), and then I dashed off to Angela's. I wore my pretty dress there. Angela curled my hair, but my hair refused to be curled, so I put on make-up and proceeded to horrify Angela with how many questions I can answer on Jeopardy. We laughed a lot during the double jeopardy round because there was a Latin category, and almost all the answers were either legal terms or, better yet, Lord Volkmer's favorite latin quotes. It was FTW. As it turns out, Dan's phone was dead, and he was a little late picking us up, but it was no big deal since the first hour and a half was law prom and so our classmates were getting rip-roaring drunk. I ran into Xiao Qian there, and Ryan met us there. Xiao Qian sat with me, Angela, and Dan at dinner. Which was late getting underway as everyone was more interested in booze than food. The food was pretty good.
And then the dancing began. It was mostly heavy hip-hop. I attempted to request some swing, but it seemed they had none, so it was no avail. I danced with Ryan on the first semi-slow dance (a country two-step; I take what I can get). Angela and I were tired of getting drinks spilled on us and watching our classmates skank it up on the dancefloor, so we retreated to look at the koi pond. It runs all through the hotel and is pretty cool. We took Dan and Katie (not to be confused with our Catholic Comrade in the Mormon Corner Kate) with us. Dan got distracted by NCAA basketball on a random television. There was some other convention in the hotel as well, and we got stared at a lot in our fancy dresses. Most of the girls wore slut-tacular cocktail dresses, but a couple of girls went all-out prom; one girl even had a corsage.
We were on our way back to the dancing when I was accosted by one of The Matts, i.e. one of two boys named Matt who were in section B last year, were in the moot court finals, and who were opposing counsel for the first mock trial Kim and I had. He stopped me and asked me why I never said hi to him in the hallways. My firs instinct, of course, was to prevaricate, and when we had the same conversation in various configurations for ten minutes straight, I asked how drunk he was. He was lucid drunk, but still pretty tanked all the same. He asked why I never talked to him. I asked him when he'd ever talked to me before, and I pointed out that the first time we'd talked had been across a fake courtroom. Which he conceded. He called me by my full name, which was weird. Probably part of his being drunk. It was a most bizarre conversation, all short phrases and one-word answers, like a two-sided cross-examination. I asked him pointless questions about himself, about his family. He made a weird joke, saying something was against his religion, and I told him that drinking was against my religion, and he laughed. I'm pretty sure he thought I was joking. I told him I'd say hello to him from now on in the hallways if I noticed him, and that seemed to make him happy. I also told him not to sneak up on me. It was a whole lot of me being defensive and abrasive, but he was drunk enough to think it was funny. It reminded me that when I'd been turning in my Barrister Ball RSVP card he'd been in there and he'd asked if I was stalking him and wanted him to be my date. Angela thinks it's funny he has a crush on me. I'm pretty sure he was just drunk - there's always going to be that one drunk guy who hits on you. I'm oddly mortified that opposing counsel might have a crush on me. But I'm weird that way.
When I went to sit back with the others - we were still hiding from the music - some drunk guys from the other convention came to talk to us. They asked us - mostly me - to help them distract the bouncer at the door so they could go party with honeys at the barrister's ball. I told them that if they could define "collateral estoppel" for the man at the door, he'd buy that they were law students and let them in. Once they realized they couldn't say "collateral estoppel", they pointed out that the man at the door wouldn't let them in without suits. I'm pretty sure they thought they were charming, but they weren't. They asked if I'd help distract the doorman. I said I could, but it'd result in a felony battery charge and I couldn't afford one of those on my record if I wanted to take the bar. They seriously ran away after that.
We stuck around for one last slow dance after that - I danced with Dan, Angela danced with Ryan - and then we went home. Took Katie home, went back to Angela's, overheard Dan's weird conversation with Amber on my phone, and now I'm home. I'll see about uploading pictures eventually.
I'm pretty beat. It was fun, overall. I like messing with drunk people. And I like dancing.
It's non-sequitur, but I love my mom.
