Day 714: Homesickness and Inertia
Jan. 14th, 2009 10:01 pmMy last night at home was very, very calm. I stayed at home with my parents. We watched some Foyle's war and hung out. I tatted. The power went out, which meant the fan for the fire went out, which meant my parents' bedroom was smoked out, so we retreated to the other end of the house. There was some flashlight action before I decided to light up some candles, including some awesome candles I got for Christmas and from Christmases past. I thought about staying up late but didn't and instead retreated to bed.
Sunday was a chill day. I wore my pretty new kimono and everyone loved it, mostly at church. The sisters in Relief Society said goodbye and wished me luck at school. We went to visit Sister Dionne at the hospital. While we were there, we saw a large polygamy family. As it turns out, their matriarch as at the hospital as well, and so on Sunday people came to visit - three older men, a couple of young men, and mostly women and children. Some of them were stand-offish, but the younger ones, especially the kids, were friendly. They stared a lot - at me, in my bright kimono. One woman played the harp, and she played beautifully. She explained how the harp worked, with the flat/sharp pedals. The harp was lovely. The family was reverent, and the grown-ups all called each other 'mother' and 'father', which was a bit creepy. I've never seen them smile and laugh before and sort of felt like I was spying.
Tuesday was kind of long - there was an early start; when we set off for Vegas it was dark. We talked in the car, and there was traffic on I-15 due to the crazy construction, so we were cutting it close, but I got checked in and through security in time. I crocheted on one flight and tatted all the rest. First class is awesome, and I got good food. People were helpful with me and my (admittedly) heavy backpack. On the last leg from Denver to Omaha (because I went from Las Vegas to LA, then LA to Denver) Dan (1L, Section B, West Valley) was on the same flight, as well as another 1L I didn't know. Brielyn was full of awesome and picked me up, and she helped me drag my luggage up to my room. I checked my mail box, which was crammed full, and I unpacked a bit before taking off to bellydancing lessons. Which was cool. Zills are freakin' hard, but I'm all right with them. I'm full of lame at balancing a cane on my head, so I'll have to practice lots. I watched the second Chronicles of Narnia movie, which broke my heart lots - the ending always does, doggone that Regina Spektor song. Daniel called me, I think just to hear a voice. I wondered why he called me at first, but then I ended up calling Ericka and Seirra, and I knew it for what it was - homesickness.
Today was all right. I finished unpacking the night before, so I set about running errands, like getting my books, picking up packages from the office (including a very cool gift from
aether_entropy, a pretty crocheted scarf that is very warm). My mom found cool music in China that she sent, including an X Japan concert DVD, which made my inner fangirl squee. Ryan and I went to the Mac Store only to discover that repairs cost way too much and buying external devices is cheaper and by far the better option. He's a good driver, and it was fun talking to him,
Enough about that.
I got my schedule sorted out, and I got my homework done for the evening, and I even got to see a new episode of Criminal Minds, which made my inner fangirl so happy. Best line ever, from Rossi regarding Reid: "He was left in a basket on the steps of the FBI." Where I come from, that sounds like an AU plotbunny.
So I got my homework done. I'm terrified for school. Not to mention the news keeps telling me that there will be a risk of frostbite and hypothermia for the first half of tomorrow. When I went into school to print off some paperwork for homework tonight, it was nigh on five in the evening and the law school parking lot was almost full, which means that even MORE undergrads have moved into our parking lot, and so getting spots'll be even harder. Which is dangerous when there's a hypothermia risk. Also, it appeared that some 1L is trying to move in on our adversely possessed study corner.
So second semester of my 2L year starts tomorrow.
I'm terrified. Ericka, love her lots, gave me a pep-talk.
I miss my mom.
But I can do this.
