(Or break things with my mind. Whichever comes first.) So Sunday was good. Went to church and met new people, like Will the 1L (in my ward, today I met Dan the 1L in another ward, and a single girl 1L, which means it won't just be me flying solo in the law school) and went to a baptism. The highlight of my Sunday was Amber, mostly. After the baptism I went back to her place, and she shared her chocolate cake, taught me how to play Yahtzee, gave me loads of awesome advice for surviving my 2L classes, and we got to talk about boys. Candidly and honestly and with lots of venting and giggling and laughing and it was all very, very good. Amber also invited me to a baseball game on Tuesday night, and I'm gonna go, because my only real memories of America's favorite pastime is one of my dad's company games I went to when I was three, and mostly I remember watching an ambulance take one of the dudes away because he got hit in the head by the baseball (whether after it was pitched or hit I'm not sure) and he was bleeding out the ear and he probably had brain damage. Seriously, that's when I learned how to tell if someone has brain damage. My mom told me as they were taking him away. So yeah, I need a new perspective on baseball, and it's good to get out, and this is my first week, so I am going to live it up somethin' good. I also got to talk to mom, which was uber good. I love talking to mom, although it was later than I would have liked and not as long as I'd've liked.

Earlier on Sunday I had no hot water, and I was ticked off. Even though church isn't until one in the afternoon, I like to get up early and get stuff done, like write letters and work on presents and things. Well, it didn't happen. I tried the shower a few times, but it was to no real avail, the water lukewarm for about two seconds before going arctic, so I huddled on the couch in my robe and read the Ensign. For an hour. My dad got me a subscription, and I was a bit annoyed at first, because he tried to sic the missionaries on me when I first moved out to law school, and I like to think I'm self-sufficient, but it was good to read, a really good way to start a Sunday, and I enjoyed it immensely. It was a calming, spiritual experience, and I am back in the swing of things something fierce. I was something of a slacker this summer with the reading and praying, but I'm on my own and I'm doing things right, because it might sound cliched and a bit hackneyed, but I can't get through law school alone and I'm not alone, so that's what counts.

Anyway. Today was awesome! I got to school at around 7:40 this morning, which sounds a bit retarded, but given the current parking situation, it was a very wise choice, and I was glad for it. I got one whole case for Crim Law briefed before I got my locker sorted out. I love my locker this year. The dial is smooth, the door doesn't stick, the upper door doesn't randomly swing open and hit me in the head, and it's near friends, so I am all kinds of happy. I got to see all kinds of friends and we reclaimed the loser's corner, along with inducting some of the incoming 1Ls with whom we are friends (most of them, admittedly, being the incoming LDS students, but we do sorta stick together). It was good to see friends again, and I still got homework done.

Everyone I've talked to says Mangrum's Evidence class is going to be good. I'm a bit nervous, as rule-based classes rather than theory-based classes seem to go badly for me, like Civ Pro, but I have friends who've already taken it, so I can go to them for help. (I got to professors as a last resort, which is dumb, as my law profs are, on the whole, awesome, and are sincere about their open-door policy.) I went to lunch at the Java Jay below the dorms as I've decided to avoid the side bar as much as possible this year unless I want soup, because then it's cheaper there (and an excuse not to leave the building in winter). I went alone and called Justin, as I hadn't called him on Sunday night, but I ended up eating with Paul and Jason, which was cool. We got to talk about summer and fun and classes this fall. (Jason is a legend among the 1Ls in our old Section A as the guy Lord Volkmer picked on for two months straight last spring. It's funny. We're legends to the underclassmen.) I have Crim Law with Shelley and Ryan, which makes me very happy. I think I'll sit next to Shelley on seating chart day. Crim Law looks like it's going to be awesome. Professor Mack is an engaging lecturer and she's funny (she said bling. Professors saying stuff like that always gives me a kick) and she's passionate about criminal law, about justice. Like Professor Mangrum is passionate about justice and honor. It makes me feel glad to be a law student, like I'm going to be someone honorable and upstanding rather than a societal Slytherin. Crim Law is a bit long, and I started spacing, but she didn't get to the cases I'd prepped for today, so that was some less homework. It is good to know when I'm up for a case, though, so I can be uber-prepared.

I hung out in the loser's corner after class and talked to Shelley and Dan the 1L and Adam P. a bit, and then I tackled my Evidence problems. As much as I should get them printed out, I prefer writing them down and working through them that way. It's easier for me, much easier, to write things down. And in different colors.

I even got my parking pass all settled today. It took about five minutes after I got back from lunch, and it's done. I also discovered that the class requirements for graduation for the class of 2010 (my class, of course) were changed to fit the new ABA guidelines. But guess what? I'm already taking one of those extra required classes, the class being Witness Examination. I also got the lowdown on interviews this fall, so I have to sign up, get my resume updated, write a cover letter, and get myself in gear for that, because despite what others think, I like Omaha, and I can totally see myself practicing here.

It also gave me a kick to see that Chani had read through my back entries on my novel and commented on pretty much all of them. At first I thought something had gone wrong on HN and that I'd have to try to be a real admin, but it was just lots of cool comments. Chani is awesome support on that novel, and I love her dearly for it.

Also, I got done with my homework before 4:30. It's true, my leaving time is officially 5, but if I'm done before then, I'm totally coming home. I also found out that Kent, my old Magic buddy, learned how to make chain mail this summer. So I am not the only freak and geek there is. We should get together and compare sometime. I danced around my apartment like a nutcase for a good ten minutes. I've discovered that I do, in fact, have to brief some cases for Crim Pro tomorrow, but I can do them tonight after FHE.

All in all, my first day as a 2L rocked. Hardcore. I love it!
