and aim for the head.

Monday was, overall, a pretty good day. As good as Mondays can be, anyway. I played some phone tag, did some wrangling, and after work, I met up with Russ and Cousin Luke, and Mum made us lasagne and things before we took off for laser tag. Yes, more laser tag. I felt like a prat because I'd left my money at home and ended up having to beg off Russ, but it was good times all around. We played with some teenaged boys who we schooled pretty well. We played with one of the off-duty staff, a nice bloke named Brian. Russ went all military on us and Luke and I took our orders dutifully, and we did well. Then about a dozen lost boys showed up in one huge horde (you can tell who they are by their clothes, really) and so we played together. I got nailed in the face by one burly boy and his gun. I kept on marching and killing things, and in pretty much every round after that I was second best on my team. When I was teamed with Russ and Luke, we stormed the upper bases, nailed the targets, and then set to laying waste to the other team. After that I was always on the other team. Aggression pays off for me in laser tag. Rather than ducking down and avoiding being shot, I marched out into the dark wilderness and shot pretty much anything that moved. As there was no friendly fire, it didn't matter if I nailed any teammates. But being brave and being willing to storm the corner base paid off. I killed lots.

Afterwards, Cousin Luke had to get a move on to pick up Cousin John from work, leaving me and Russ to play video games. We played Tekken 5. Russ started off awfully, but he got his learning curve up pretty quick. He won a few battles, but he never won an entire war. Then we played some Guitar Hero. We both got brave and tried things on Hard. I can play bits of songs on Hard, but overall I'm pretty awful. Good experience, at least until my wrist gave out.

My machine was being evil, and so it was hard to sleep.

It was bloody difficult to work today. Every time I thought I was almost done with a memo for one client I'd discover I still had nonsense to look up, so I switched clients and thought I'd try to get some legislative history on. It was bloody boring, and as it turns out, Lexis Nexis Congressional doesn't have a ruddy thing for state legislatures. I was pleased to see that I have my Westlaw back, as I'm always wary of accidentally incurring extra charges on Brad's Lexis, but Westlaw wasn't much help either. I hit up the actual Utah Legislature web site, and it was helpful, but now I've loads of crap to sort through. I was starting to nod off at my laptop when Mum called me. There was a bit of bait and catch as she asked if I was busy and I hedged, as I technically was busy but I wasn't doing well at being busy.

Mum told me she needed to go to the hospital.

Great thing to hear over the phone.

So I packed up and booked it out of there pronto. Dad can't drive, so I took her to the ER. She was calm. Apparently she's not in pain, but the entire left side of her body has felt like it's falling asleep for the past two days, non-stop, and she was nervous. I took her to the ER, got her settled in, and then came home to make sure Dad was okay. I finished the third volume of the Wyrd Museum series, which was greatly satisfying, and then I took a nap. When I picked up Mum up, she said she'd had all the tests and that the doctors think it's either a pinched nerve or diabetes, so she has to go in for MRIs and things. I figure a pinched nerve can be fixed. It's been a right mess for our family this year - first me at school with the alleged narcolepsy, Dad's heart attack, and now Mum. I joked that there's something in the water. Two people on our street have had knee replacement surgery, two have had cataract surgery, and now two have had heart surgery. Our neighbors are falling apart.

Dad, bless his heart, made supper while I was fetching Mum from the hospital, so we had food and then relaxed for a bit (Dad and I like to play Jeopardy with the telly) before Mum and I went to distribute flyers at the neighborhood where Dad is on the HOA board. I did most of the sticking as Mum was dragged into conversations by residents - most of them complaining.

I think I now understand what Ericka means when she says I look murderous when I space out. Sometimes I get in this...mood. It's not angry, it's just...cruel. That cold cruel that summons the regency heroine diction and my old accent, that makes me sound haughty and wintry. Some boys - couldn't have been more than seventeen or eighteen - were goofing around in front of one of the houses where I was sticking flyers. I asked, politely if frostily, if they lived there, and they said no. They attempted to amuse me with the awful gyrations they must have considered dancing, but I went on my way. And then a pair of prats in a truck honked their horns at me. I was torn between flashing them the twos, cursing at them, and throwing out a cold, "Do I know you?" Dollar to a donut they thought I was one of the Hispanic girls who lives in the neighborhood and that I wouldn't give them trouble. They actually drove around the block twice and hassled me twice, but I ignored them.

It might have had to do with the fact that I had Creature Feature in one ear. I was ready to let them have it.

As much as I love my new short hair, the one drawback is that I can no longer wear my throwing knives in my hair. Justin left me with a practice target and some throwing tips, so we'll see how much those bastards like it when I sink a knife into one of their tyres.

I worked some more on that doll dress. I'm almost out of another color of yarn. It's bizarre. I didn't think it would take that much yarn. Mum asked if the dress would actually fit the doll, so I checked, and it does fit. I'll just have to purchase some notions so I can buckle the dress on when it's done. I think it'll look good, though. We'll see.

So yesterday was good. Today I was...scary, to say the least. Mum just barely noticed the big bruise on my face to where I took the hit. It didn't phase me like it ought to have. It doesn't hurt unless I touch it.
