Day 535: A week of silence
Nov. 18th, 2007 12:04 pm...has elapsed, for which I do apologize.
One of the main reasons for the lack of updates is that I started off the week rather ill. I had only a mildly runny nose on Monday for Family Home Evening. Which was loads of nerdy fun. It was game night, and they invited us to bring games to play, so I took my Magic cards along to share in the nerdy love. I think Brielyn thought I was going to show magic tricks with cards, but oh well, it was fun while it lasted. Bringing out something nerdy and old-fashioned like Magic cards can really get people to reveal their nerdy roots.
Tuesday morning started off with what was a mere sniffle and sore throat and had devolved into a full-blown fever and cold by the time I was a third of the way through Contracts. Professor White was still down and out with bad health, so Professor Anderson, the section B contracts prof, taught us. He was scary. All Socractic method, viciousness, and vitriol if we were nervous. I don't know that, had Professor White adopted similar teaching tactics we would have been nervous, but he was new and strange and so we were reluctant to cooperate with him. Still, it was an interesting class period. I got picked on. Jordan got picked on. Half of the LDS kids in our section got picked on. It was mere chance, obviously, but still funny to us. On Tuesday night, Aaron, Jordan's roommate, called and asked me out on a date. He's a cool kid (a PhD student for something related to computers) and so I said yes, even though I was several different kinds of pathetically ill.
Wednesday was about as miserable as Tuesday, and it turns out that having a fever makes me much more susceptible to passing out in class. As Jason was equally sick, he went to the doctor and so wasn't there to prod me back into consciousness. I passed out on one of the couches in the commons between classes. I got called on in Torts for the first time and did all right, all things considered, given that there was a demon disco going on in my head the entire time. I didn't get much homework done, trying to sleep off the random bouts of fever. I did do my visiting teaching. Even made brownies. I can make brownies out of a box. Yay. It was fun, getting to know my visiting teaching girls. One is a meteorology student, and the other is a med student. Good times.
Thursday I was feeling better. It was our last research class of the semester, and it was strangely short. I used my free time to attempt to get caught up on my nanowrimo word count. *cringe* I'm about 2k behind and running out of ideas. Or rather, I have discovered that the idea I started with is not so forthcoming as I would like. Figures. That's what I get for not having a real plan. Also, I think I have a subconscious mental block when it comes to writing a proper romance. I have all the ingredients and characters, but the romance never happens. Guess I should stick to the assassins and mercenaries, eh?
Friday was good fun. Had no Torts that afternoon, so we went to Panera's, a sandwich-cafe place, to study for Torts instead. Got into some loud, heated, but altogether amusing arguments. The guy at the next table commented that we were definitely on our way to becoming lawyers. It was fun. Other students were there to study as well. Studying with food is surprisingly effective. And the food was good. Afterwards I went home to relax and chill and maybe sleep off some more of the cold before the date. It was fun. Aaron and Jordan picked me up, and then we went to pick up Brielyn. We went to buy juice to contribute to our portion of baked dinner, which Nate made. Baked spaghetti. Never had it before, but it was good. Afterwards, we played trivial pursuit, the Nineties, version, which only served to make me more aware of the fact that I have lots of useless knowledge stored away in my brain that triggers itself for the most random purposes. Aaron and I did win, though.
Saturday was lots of tug-o-war with my work ethic. The inner Nagi ran screaming from homework. Brad chased him down and held him at gunpoint. I did do homework, eventually, and then took off to go to the food bank auction thing. We brought cans of food to donate to the cause, and were awarded auction points with the cans. I was only seriously gunning for a couple of things, including the short story, but didn't have nearly enough points. In the end, a bunch of us pooled our points together - after we'd bought things for ourselves - and we managed to score a giant wrapped box with a bow. It was me, Jordan, Aaron, Monika, Brielyn, Thomas, Seth, and a boy I'd never met before named Scott who all chipped in. They let me unwrap the box since I really wanted it (with all those Christmas presents taunting me in the closet, well, I had to open something, didn't I?) and we divvied up the goods, which were books, toys, and candy. I left afterwards with every intention of buckling down and attempting to make good on my nanowrimo word count when Jordan called and invited me to come watch a movie with the gang, so we (me, Jordan, Brielyn, Aaron, Cassie, and Kyle) watched Secondhand Lions (which I *heart* very much) and played Halo 2. I have never played before. Anyone who knows me knows I am terrible at FPS games. Goldeneye, anyone? Yes, well, this was just as bad. I didn't manage to kill anyone once, although I came close a few times.
And now today I get to teach Relief Society. They called me yesterday and told me, but that's okay, I read the lesson and I have a plan.
Sorry I didn't update this week. I'll update more frequently now that I'm not so plague-ridden.
