Day 495: Law school, day the first
Aug. 20th, 2007 09:23 pmSo I survived my first day of law school. It was fairly easy. All the older or graduated students I've met assure me that this is the last of such days. But that's okay.
So I missed the bus this morning. Luckily for me, I wandered out to the bus stop with a sufficient buffer time so I could take my car in the likely even that I missed the bus. Which I did, since bus service does not resume until tomorrow. So I took my car. Didn't get lost on the way to school this time, for which I am proud. I did get a bit confused as to how to get the student parking garage to open for me. As it turns out, all I have to do is wave my student ID at the censor and I can get in. Very hi-tech. I made it to my locker to change out my books, and then to class.
Volkmer was, as the 2Ls warned, scary. The basic premise of his first lecture was "show up unprepared and I will commit homicide upon your person." That was that. I am prepared for his class. After that, Con Law with Watts, who is new, was positively pleasant. According to older student reports, he came to teach from JAG, but he's pretty laid back. There was someting a bit kooky and new-age about his insistence with the big picture, but after some consideration I came to appreciate the way he structured his syllabus. Usually after that class we have a nearly three-hour break till Torts. Today, however, the break was only an hour and a half because we had library orientation. In that time I got myself a study group (Xiao Qian, the Chinese girl, and a slightly overzealous but polite man named Jason). I am thinking that, once I get my format down, taking notes on my laptop will be good. However, so many people clacking away at the keys is a bit disturbing. Watts joked that law schools were turning out not only lawyers but court reporters.
I did my reading for Con Law and some of Property before orientation, which was short. There was free pizza, and now I am on Westlaw and Lexis Nexis (wheeee!), and then I went to Torts. Dean Dallon is very pleasant and easy-going as far as demeanor (though that is no guarantee at all that he will be easy-going about grades). Once I set up a study agreement with Jason and Xiao Qian, I stuck behind to ask Dean Dallon about a ward closer to my apartment. There is none. One is somewhere scary and downtown, or the other one is out on 144th where I went with my parents that one Sunday. Dean Dallon said, if I'm a bit nervous about driving, he could get one of the other kids to pick me up. Sounds like a plan to me, because that construction out on West Dodge is life-threatening to people like me whose vehicles are their own personal kryptonite.
After that, I went to the bank (which was not a fun hike with all my A-Day books on my back, in the humidity which did turn to rain) and then braved downtown to get my tax exemption sticker. I got all the way down there and didn't have the paperwork they wanted, so I'll have to get the necessary paperwork on campus and then go again tomorrow. At least I know where it is now.
I came home and got property done. I took a stab at torts, but I had missed my afternoon nap, so I took a slightly later one, made myself supper (semi-healthy - sandwich and apple) and did some more Torts. Then, on Dean Dallon's recommendation, I took myself down to the Institute for Family Home Evening. It was fun. We played "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader." We had no fifth graders at our disposal so (not so oddly enough) I posed as one, alongside some of the others there. Since it's the beginning of the year lots of people were new. I met a 1L, a 2L, and a recent graduated of CU Law there. Apparently some other boy in my section (a redhead) is also LDS, so I am not so alone as I originally thought. Everyone - Dave, Jackie, Kim - was very nice, and they invited me to the big Institute Opening Bash this Saturday night, which will give me something to do instead of sitting at home being annoyed that most of my classmates are out at a bar.
We played in the basement of the institute building because the tornado sirens were going off, and when that happens everyone must retreat to the basement. Tornado sirens. Not at home, that's for sure.
But overall, I had a good day. I am okay.
Only, I should finish my torts. And find the time to watch me some Titus Andronicus. Hopefully tomorrow night I will get a decent start on my homework.
I love you all!
