We were standing out in the hallway today discussing our degrees and what we'd do with them, and Del claims that she is the only student pursuing a worthwhile degree (save perhaps Erin whose degree is advanced artisan training and ceramics is a useful skill for people who are civilized and eat off of dishes). Marty honestly asserted that his theatre degree is bullshit, but hey, despite the song "What do you do with a BA in English?" I think that my degree is entirely useful. This is my apology for pursuing the degree that I am pursuing at this time. First of all, people use language every day, and despite the fact that no one speaks as precisely as s/he should effective and proper communication is necessary. As for my degree being useless - I think it isn't. Despite the fact that advanced critical methods always leaves me a headache, it has taught me to see things that most people don't think about. I can see the ideology in every utterance someone gives to me, and it's something I wouldn't have been able to do if I didn't know any critical theory. Del is a psych major, and she can see how someone's psychology affects what they say, but hey, admit it, if you hadn't learnt any critical theory (and not necessarily from the big bad C) you wouldn't consider the ideology you operate under either. Seirra is a creative writing major, and she can see the agendas and ideologies behind people's writings, because when you can write to manipulate effectively you can see how other people do the exact same thing. This, of course, is not to say that you manipulate for bad things, but whenever you write and consider your diction it is because you wish for discerning readers to consider the subtle shades of difference for the particular synonym you chose and see through the lens of its connotation. History majors learn to see ideology as well because they see how ideologies move societies and how they change over time.

I'm glad I'm an English major. Sure, some of the stuff I think of induces headaches, and no one cares what I think about, but maybe they should care. You should be aware of the ideology under which you operate so you can make real choices, consciously decide whether or not you want this ideology. Philosophy majors, English majors, history majors - it's like we get to peek backstage, stare at the shiny steel frame of the superstructures and state apparatuses (repressive or ideological as they may be).

Whenever I try to talk to someone about essentialism or constructionism or theory or philosophy in general I find myself rebuffed with, "Who cares?" Someone does. I do, or I wouldn't think about it. People should care. Maybe we are all sleepers, like Thoreau said.

Enough with the rant.

Last night Russell-niichan came up to visit. Del was tired and not feeling too social, but Russell is cool that way so we all hung out.

I think that was the longest Magic game I have ever played. I think it lasted for a couple of hours. Me, Alex, Josh, Seirra and Russell played a huge game. Russell used one of Alex's decks, Seirra's sliver deck came to life and I really need to mana seed my deck better. Josh was the first to go because we always gang up on him, and while I occasionally feel really bad about that when he starts with the damned counter spells I just want to take him out. Seirra lasted a little longer than I did, and then it came down to the wire, Russell and Alex and Alex's two decks. It's the first time I've ever seen a magic game end due a player's library running out of cards. It was a load of fun, Del and BenTen and Marty hanging around and watching the game. Russell and Alex are really awesome guys and I just had lots of fun. It was good to see Russell again. I'll have to thank Alex for putting Russell up for the night.

Today was...well, I think my most brilliant moments of bullshit in Calland's class. Aton's classes are always cool. I Marty-glomp the Marty too much. I don't kitty glomp Rowsdower enough. I've been taking lots of pictures with my digital camera because I'm a nerd. Nick came to visit, and when I went to visit Del after he left she said I was giving off sunny glowy vibes. Really got to cut down on that, huh?

Critical methods really gave me a headache.

But last night was fun. I love my friends.

So. Erin has just run off to an appointment. She is being stalked by Julian the creepy guy who worked in the cafeteria. She modeled for his art class last night. I feel tainted and I'm not her. Del is at work. Seirra is at work. BenTen is heading off for class.

I am all alone to get ready for my first real date.

Can we say "TERROR"?

Yeah. Um. Wow.

I'm scared. I'll do what I can.

Gulp.
