And I don't mean the raven from Sandman..."What grade are we in again?" When I worked at the restaurant the crew was almost entirely female except for some non-social bus boys and the cooks, who were more or less in their own little world, and I think I was shielded from the melodrama that is the workplace. Not so at this new job. It's like being back in high school again and watching the sophomores agonize over each other, date each other, antagonize each other and then break up. Only in red and khaki uniforms. Work really isn't bad on the whole, although I seem to have made friends with one half of the crew that the other half doesn't like. The good news is that I'm spending more and more time at the service desk as two of the service desk girls are gone. One quit and has found herself a respectable, geeky job as a chemist (though not the pharmacist kind) and the other has been promoted. I do like the service desk more. I get out later than when I closed as a cashier, but at least there's some variety. Marx was right when he said humans weren't made for mindlessly repetitive work. Granted, he mentioned this in reference to assembly lines in factories, but it still applies. Mindless repetition is mindless repition whether you're in a factory or a department store.

I have never appreciated teamwork more than tonight, though. As cashiers its half competition half gossip to see who can check out the fastest and get the most red cards. In the rest of the store there are more teams. Matt, Dave and Treesa tonight were just awesome with the go-backs, and I am truly grateful for hard workers like Treesa.

I have a few days off now, and I can even go to church for once, which will be nice. Yesterday I went to the temple to do baptisms for the dead with Dad and Derrick, and it was a great way to start off the day.

Right now I'm pumping myself full of caffeine with plans of staying up late and working on my novel.
